The latest protests came after U.S. investigators admitted that mishandling of Korans did occur on atleast 5 occasions at Guantanamo Bay. They found no evidence that Korans were ever flushed down toilets but acknowledged that cases that "could be broadly defined as mishandling" did occur. There were protests in Pakistan, Egypt, Lebanon, Iraq, Indonesia and Malaysia involving thousands with no injuries.

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan - Thousands of Muslims marched Friday in Islamic countries from Asia to the Middle East, burning symbols of America to protest the alleged desecration of the Quran by military personnel at a U.S. prison in Guantanamo, Bay, Cuba.

The rallies in Pakistan, Egypt, Lebanon, Iraq, Indonesia, Malaysia and elsewhere followed an admission Thursday by U.S. investigators that Islam's holy book was mishandled at Guantanamo. But American officials claimed it was often inadvertent and denied that any Qurans were flushed down a toilet, as Newsweek magazine had reported in a now-retracted article.

No injuries were reported in Friday's demonstrations, with police simply watching in most places. In India's Kashmir region, however, police fired tear gas and used batons to disperse hundreds of Muslims gathered outside a mosque in the capital of Srinagar.

The cat is well and truly out of the bag now. The U.S investigators have confirmed the desecration of Korans at the detention facility. Regardless of whether they believe the cases were accidental or not is moot.

I feel the next course of action for the Bush adminstration should be a full and frank open apology to muslims the World over. Including the promise to stamp out the Koran abuse and investigate those found responsible for the abuse.

Apologies dont cost anything and would go along way to convincing moderate muslims to not get violent.

Make no mistake, violation of the Koran is a big deal for muslims. It is their belief that the Koran is the literal word of God and violating it is a violation of God. Much like a violation of a church or synagogue would be a violation of God.
