The FDA is looking into a possible link between the male impotency drug Viagra and a type of blindness in men who take the drug. Researchers are examining a possible connection between the drug and NAION, or non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy. It is still unclear whether the drug could cause the blindness or if just the root causes of the disease and impotency are related.

news.yaho o.com
WASHINGTON - Federal health officials are examining rare reports of blindness among some men using the impotence drug Viagra.

The Food and Drug Administration still is investigating, but has no evidence yet that the drug is to blame, said spokeswoman Susan Cruzan.

This type of blindness is called NAION, or non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy. It can occur in men who are diabetic or have heart disease, the same conditions that can cause impotence and thus lead to Viagra use.

The FDA has 50 reports of the blindness. Viagra has been taken by more than 23 million men worldwide.

"We take this seriously," said FDA's Cruzan.

This needs to be studied more thoroughly, but any men taking Viagra should stay tuned to such studies and meanwhile use the drug only when necessary.

Hmm, 50 reported out of 23,000,000 users. Sounds acceptable!!!
Consider the pleasure and goog times it brings to millions of men (and women) around the globe.

Umm, no, zero out of 23,000,000 is acceptable. They should test, test, test, and then three more test before sending to the masses. So bent on making money they forget about safety, or just dont care at all about safety.

Oh I agree, test test test should have been conducted before the drug hit the mark and test test test should be done now!!! But results like 50/23,000,000 are acceptable. They can post a friggen warning label on it.
Most other common drugs, penacilan (sp) have higher risk than 50/23,000,000.

Hell you have more of a chance of choking on advil than you do of going blind from viagra.

But after test it turns out there is a far greater chance then 50/23,000,000 then yes they should consider recalling the drug.

Anyways, I don't think it's the viagra that's making them go blind

(get it?)

I think the study should focus on males who have high blood pressure and/or diabetes and whether they should be using Viagra, as it could accelerate a pre-existing condition.

Age-related macular degeneration (ARMD)

Yes! The thing is, there is a correlation between the conditions that can cause blindness anyway, such as diabetes, and the need for Viagra. So this is a very delicate study in the realm of medicine and statistics.

As to "zero tolerance to risk" - come on! There are 7,600 cases in the US every year when a person would die due to unexpected reaction to aspirin. Realistically, almost any drug can be potentially letal. In a few select cases, it is.

I just don't know why anybody would use Viagra when there is Cialis

How about the 100's of heart attacks I am sure can be 'attributed' to this. Gimme a break, 50 cases "not directly linked' with a drug used over 20,000,000 times.

Plus, 2 out of every 10,000 people is deaf AND blind

www.cnib.ca...

so this seems like nothing more than a report funded by a rival "erection" drug maker for scare value.

I tell you what people I don't want to sound bad or sick but doesn't you don't need eyes to find your target you know.

At least men can still get their pleasure, so what is more important your eyes or your ability to perform.

Mayby it's not the Viagra but the plastic wraps around each pill. See the current posting on: Phthalates Proven Harmful to Testes.

Last year my heart doctor wanted to put me on a nitroglycerin patch. I refused and told him my reason was that if I did I wouldn't be able to take Viagra. He acted shocked and told me that I shouldn't be taking Viagra anyway because it could kill me. My reply, which almost caused him to pee himself laughing, was "Hell Doc, some things are worth dying for." I think he thought I was just joking.
