Russian military withdrawal plan to Armenia angers Azerbaijan

A proposal announced by Russia's top brass to move arms from controversial military bases in the former Soviet republic of Georgia to Moscow's regional ally Armenia angered officials in neighbouring Azerbaijan on Friday.

"We are seriously concerned and we would not want Russia to take such a step now"

Azerbaijan is technically still at war with Armenia over Nagorny Karabakh, which forces loyal to Yerevan have occupied since 1994.

"The situation in the region is very sensitive, the atmosphere of security and stability must be taken into consideration," Azimov said.

Russia has military bases in both Georgia and Armenia but Georgia has demanded the immediate withdrawal of Russian forces from its territory, as Western influence there and in Azerbaijan increases at Moscow's expense.

Azerbaijan and especially Georgia have received considerable military aid from the United States and NATO in the past few years and both countries form a key link in a US-backed energy corridor spanning Turkey and Central Asia.

UKRAINE MAY SEND PEACEKEEPERS TO NAGORNY KARABAKH

Pyotr Poroshenko, the Secretary of Ukrainian Defense and Security Council has told AzerTAj Kiev-based reporter he didn’t rule out Ukraine’s sending its peacekeepers to Nagorny Karabakh. ‘This decision will be considered by the Council, and the corresponding statement has already been presented to the government,’ he said.

Mr. Poroshenko added his country would send its peacekeepers to the area of the frozen conflict ‘only if both sides are willing.’ ‘Most importantly, both sides give credence to Ukraine for it to become a guarantor of peace in the region,’ he said.

The Baku Ceyhan Campaign is working to raise public awareness of the social problems, human rights abuses and environmental damage that is being caused by the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan oil pipeline, which runs through Azerbaijan, Georgia and Turkey.

Its good business, for all countries involved in the pipeline, all the countries that have the pipeline running thru them will profit from this long pipeline. I hear that the countries with the pipeline in them will receive one dollar for every barrel of oil that flows thru the pipe. That's a million dollars a day for doing nothing. And for these developing countries its a really needed income.

A three-day conference dedicated to the prevention of terrorist attacks on oil and gas pipelines is taking place in Baku. The conference is organized by the pipeline security department and special security service, Trend reported. BP experts and contracting companies representatives will be informed with the results of the department work, especially its methods of securing BTC pipeline, Baku-Supsa and Baku-Novorossisk pipelines and Sangachal terminal.

The major threat to pipelines comes from conflicts in the Caucasus and instability

BP: First Ship Loads Oil From New Caspian Pipeline

BP, operator of the Baku-Tblisi-Ceyhan (BTC) pipeline, today announced that the first cargo of oil transported through the pipeline from Azerbaijan has been exported from the Ceyhan marine terminal on the Turkish Mediterranean coast.

A cargo of around 600,000 barrels of crude oil from Azerbaijan was loaded on to the BP tanker, British Hawthorn, which sailed from the terminal today.

Security experts from 31 countries to meet in Baku

Within the framework of the NATO - Euroatlantic Partnership Council, the seminar devoted to terrorism will be conducted July 6-7 in Baku. The seminar will gather 59 experts from 31 countries of the Euroatlantic Partnership Council and local security and secret services representatives. The event will be addressed by George Katsirdakis, head of the NATO Defense Policy and Planning Division and other NATO representatives, Azertag reported.
