Terms Of Endearment

Recalling councilors is one of the things I'm pondering. I think there should be a relatively painless way to do that.

Aside from recalls, councilors will, due to the unpredictability of life, simply become unavailable to do their jobs or wish to step down. In such cases, we should allow for replacing them -- again, as painlessly as possible.

Whatever mechanism we use should be as immune to drama and abuse as possible, which ain't easy.

But for what it's worth, I think making councilors easy to replace is vital to making them responsive to members and not a bunch of worthless lame duck politicians.

As for the term, the initial experiment is for three months.

I think three months also happens to be just about right for councilor terms going forward. It's long enough to learn the ropes and short enough to keep people from becoming too cozy.

Any councilor who isn't focused on making ATS better for members is a liability, not an asset.

Terms of office and replacement mechanisms should be designed with that in mind.

According to SkepticOverlord, the plan is to have a temporary campaign forum in place tonight.

Along with that, I expect we'll have the general election ballots up and running at the same time or soon after, so people who only log in on weekends can have their shot.

SO mentioned a 72-hour period for having the polls open, which seems reasonable to me -- if part of that falls on a weekend.

While SO makes all this look easy, he's working on a weekend for this, and sometimes things pop up in implementation that can slow things down.

So while I'm hoping we can kick into gear tonight, I recommend being patient, because none of this happens on its own.

As long as he represents the members, and I'm sure he would, who cares?

A good point...and I certainly would do so....
3 months? That's good, not too long then... Are we imposing term limits?
Seriously, no back to back would give an opportunity to more....
but the counterpoint is, the people may want someone in still....tricky thing about politics....

3 months is abit too short i feel,
i would say 6 months max for office.

Is there going to be a limit to how many times you can stand for voting?

LMAO! That's the curme I know and love/hate.

LOL! Now that would be an interesting event. An ATS impeachment. Would we kick it off with a referendum? How many aye posts in a "I move we impeach!" would be sufficient for a referendum? curme - you and I may need to draft some procedures on this...after all, look at the sordid ilk we're dealing with!

LOL Val! Not that I'm implying that any nominees are not qualified, or wouldn't do a great job. But hey, you have to prepare for any eventuality.

It would probably take about three months of drama for any impeachment, and then the term would be over!
