The new movie starring Jane Fonda Monster-in-Law will not be shown in some Kentucky theaters because of owners' concerns over the actress's activist behavior during the Vietnam War. The theaters in question are nearby to U.S. military bases, and carry marquees advertising "No Jane Fonda movie in this theater." Jane Fonda was an outspoken activist protester against the Vietnam War and met with the enemy North Vietnamese Vietcong during the war.

seattletimes.nwsource.com
ELIZABETHTOWN, Ky. — The owner of two Kentucky theaters has refused to show the new Jane Fonda film "Monster-in-Law" because of the activist role the actress took during the Vietnam War.

Ike Boutwell, who trained pilots during the Vietnam War, expressed his disapproval by displaying pictures outside the Elizabethtown Movie Palace showing Fonda clapping with a North Vietnamese anti-aircraft crew in 1972. The marquee outside Showtime Cinemas in nearby Radcliff reads: "No Jane Fonda movie in this theater."

Both theaters are just a few miles from the Army post of Fort Knox, south of Louisville.

I know some people will cry censorship etc. to this move, but the owner of these theaters is perfectly in his right to show whatever he wants. I'm sure there's also a financial motive, since I'm sure many of the clientele are military, and Jane's not too popular with them.

How can anyone cry censorship? They don't like fonda, think she's a dirty commie, so that don't want to show her movies. Thats not censorship. I doubt anyone is calling it that.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking.

When iMax didn't show the evolution movie, or whatever, no one cried censorship, we cried, "Damn, too bad the evolutionists don't go to the movies as much as creationists..."

People certainly were crying censorship in that thread! From the analysis in the orignal post itself:

People always talk about censorship in America. Well, this is a great example of it. Separation of Church and State was a great idea, but I guess, it does not apply any longer. If religious groups protest hard enough, they can change many things.

Hahahaha, wow, how sad is that? Lord of the Jews!(variance of Lord of the Dance joke by Dennis Leary, but this way I don't have to quote him, just give out a long explanation.....)

What's next? Banning any movie that isn't "Bow down to Bush or DIE!"? WHat? This movie has black people in it? BANNED! What? This movie has an anti-violence stance in it? BANNED! What? This movie has reality/truth in it? BANNED!

Hmmm, selective memory, I guess.

Oh well, Jane Fonda is old and decrepit. It's all about Bridget Fonda now.

EDIT: Movie theatre operators can do and show whatever legal selections they want.

Along those same lines, Michael Bolton gets no play in my ride.

You'd've thought that J.Lo would've balanced it out tho, what with Fonda being an old hag. Maybe they could just use computers to edit out fonda and make the mother in law into a talking jlos butt!

I'm sorry, but that's just ignorant. I was in the Army for six years, I've never met a person who cared one way or the other about her. It was long ago, and the kids today barely know who Jane Fonda is. Only the right-wing wackos try to stoke the fires of hatered when it comes to Jane Fonda. Trust me, the 'mlilitary
clientele' really don't care. To try to claim they do because Rush or Sean says they do, is just silly.

THe simplist solution is if you dont like cause of the stance of an actor in the mvoie... DON'T SEE IT!
no need to make sure that J.lo fans cannot see it

The people in Kentucky should thank him the movie is terrible and a waste of their hard earned dollars.

If I understand correctly cencorship is about when the content of such a movie is not appreciated/allowed by a certain group of people.
This is about people disliking Jane Fonda and boycotting her movie because of that.

These people are retarded if you ask me, by the way.

You saw it? I haven't, and won;t, Jlo is in it, but she never shows skin(the good skin
) so there is no point. Unlike Halle Berry, now those are great movies, even the ones she doesn't get naked in! Same with Angelina Jolie, she doesn't have to get naked in a movie for it to be great.

Also, she bought a mansion, couldn't find the kitchen, so to cook food for a house party thing she set a room on fire. Now that is HOT!

lets just be honest, it looks like a lame ass movie anyways

DONT GO AND SEE IT

I don't plan on seeing it and I could careless what stupid activities loser media people do, I mean I don't care at all. Negative Postive who cares, I don't know them personally so what blah blah has breast cancer, I don't care she ain't my homegirl

who cares if peewee liked to spank it I mean why are we so invovled with what these people do

oh oh did ya hear did ya hear whats herface said this that and this, uh no not until you crapped it into my eardrum for the 20 billionth time

if they feel so adamant about hating her just assasinate her and take one for the home team so I don't have to hear about it anymore, or better yet I wished they just shut up.

excuse me while I go and gouge my eyes out

I'm a 23 year old Soldier. Jane Fonda is a traitor, and should have been brought up on charges.

With that said, yeah, there ARE some young pups in the Army that know their history, and have an education. Thank you.

Humm.........This is not the first time that a "particular movie" is banned from theaters.

It makes you wonder...........

Perhaps is not just the excused of being "Jane's movie" but also the fact that more and more often we have seen how "groups" are monitoring what we are allowed to see or not.

I don't really care for Fonda, and I really careless of her activities, she is in American and you have the right to protest what you don't believe in.

My problem is the fact that I as an adult don't need somebody "else or group" to dictate my options of what I can see or not when I pay for a ticket in a movie theater.

And that factor alone should bother any free loving American in this country.

No, Marg, actually, this is exactly what isn't happening here.

Exactly, and that is why this American theatre owner is not showing Fonda's film.

My problem is the fact that I as an adult don't need somebody "else or group" to dictate my options of what I can see or not when I pay for a ticket in a movie theatre.

He's not a GROUP, he's not dictating any options to you, HE OWNS THE THEATRE and can show or not show whatever the hell he wants -- you have a problem with it? Go to another theatre or open your own theatre and lease the film reel and showing rights.

EDIT Fixed some trailing text. Also, I would like to add, this is in two theatres out of thousands and thousands of theatres in the country.

Actually when the theater is offering a pay service to the population the population has the right to be offered choices.

No the bias choices of the owners.

When you run a business for the public you have to appeal to everybody and not a certain group of people............that will fall into prejudiced and often racism.

By this logic, the gift shop at St. Patrick's Cathedral would have to sell porn alongside religious tapes.

If people aren't happy with the choice offered by this theater, there are others they can take their business to. This is a free enterprise system.

I agree with the movie being banned. I mean, any movie with J-Lo and Jane Fonda has to suck. I say make it a nationwide ban
