Sonic boom? Earthquake? Big bang theories abound...

Topic started on 2-8-2003 @ 09:55 PM by William One Sac

The earthquake experts say it wasn't a shaker, and military authorities say they didn't have the kind of planes in the air that can make a sonic boom.

But whatever it was, the noise that rattled Lowcountry communities about 1:30 p.m. Friday commanded a lot of attention.

............So what's left? One theory batted around was that it could be "Seneca Guns," a folk explanation used to describe unexplained booms often associated with the coast of North Carolina. Such booms have been experienced in North America since before the Age of Flight, some as early as the 18th century.

This is a natural occurance that happens along the East coast.....from New York to Georgia. I would think anywhere along the ocean, whether it be the Atlantic or the Pacific.
They are natural releases of some gas, such as methane, from the sea floor. There are other theories, such as the continental shelfs moving, etc. They are called many things: Brontides, sea burps, Mother Earth passing gas....but they are merely a natural order of the Earth.

SUUUUUUUUUURE they don't.

jk

I live on the east coast and for a while lived relatively near the ocean (about 20 miles away.) HOWEVER, I think you all know that Newport News is home to a LOT of military bases. I'm so used to hearing fighter jets buzz my house that I don't even notice them anymore... where I live now is right near a train track (the realtor failed to mention that to us) and I don't really notice train sounds either if I'm at home... so I can't say if I've ever heard these things... I may have and just never knew it.
