Cuban born Luis Posada Carriles who has been convicted of an attempted assassination on Fidel Castro has been in hiding in Honduras and in March has apparently slipped into the U.S. Borders via the Rio Grande. Posada's lawyer, Eduardo Soto, believes he should be granted political asylum for his services to the country while working in the CIA some decades ago.

Is he an international terrorist - or a patriotic freedom fighter? At the age of 77, Cuban-born Luis Posada Carriles may seem a bit old to be either. But he certainly was one or the other for most of his life, dedicated to getting rid of Cuban leader Fidel Castro.

How to classify the former CIA agent, convicted in the past of trying to assassinate Mr Castro and of killing 73 civilians by bombing a Cuban airliner, is proving a major dilemma for George Bush. The outcome could affect the President's credibility in his proclaimed war on terrorism.

Posada, a Venezuelan citizen who has also been linked by conspiracy theorists with the assassination of President John F Kennedy, is reported to have slipped across the Rio Grande from Mexico to the US in March. He had been in hiding, apparently in Honduras, since he was pardoned in Panama last August from an eight-year jail term for plotting to kill the Cuban leader during a summit meeting in that country in November 2000.

The U.S. has stated that they don't know whether or not Luis Posada Carriles is currently in the country.

Regardless, Fidel Castro wants Posada to be tried by an international court for his terrorist bombing in the Cuban airliner nearly 30 years ago. Castro has called for a massive protest in Havana in order to expedite this process.

fidel castro called the people piloting the civilian aircrafts of "hermanos al rescate" as terrorists... These people were merely looking to help Cubans trying to leave the island with home made rafts. This is the reason for them being in international waters looking for Cubans who are always trying to leave the communist regime, yet fidel castro called in two migs to destroy them over international waters.

I am certain that this man, Posada, tried to kill castro, but now castro is trying to set up this man with something he probably didn't do. Posada wanted to kill castro, why would he destroy a civilian airliner? castro never travels in civilian airliners.
