This may sound stupid but, is that white stuff that part of Area 51 is laying on snow? Or is it salt? Or just white dirt?

And 'Groom Lake' being the name of the dry lake bed itself. And Area 51 is sometimes called the Groom Lake facility or base or something like that as well.

There's a well known satellite shot that shows snow on the ramp that had been ploughed into mounds, so yes, it can snow there. In the spring the runoff often fills the dry lake bed.......there's even a funny pic from the A-12 days of a guy sitting on an earth mound in the middle of the lake with the hangars in the background and he's holding a fish he caught.

It is the natural surface of Groom Lake. Remember, Groom Lake is a DRY LAKEBED, there was water there at one time. Most water contains what is called mineral trace. Over centuries this mineral trace gets into to soil of the lake, river or stream bed. If at a later time the water dries up, the mineral trace turns the soil white. If you look at the white soil, you can see how big the lake was when there was water there.

Area 51 is high desert. The mountains get snow on them every year. The elevation of the lake bed is around 5,000 feet above sea level, so yeah, they get snow. Not all deserts are hot, and in that area, temps in the winter get down to -20 degrees.
