Conservative Voices On PBS May Be Illegal

Topic started on 12-5-2005 @ 05:45 AM by Xenersys

"Two congressional Democrats called Wednesday for an investigation into recent activities by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, suggesting that efforts by the Republican chairman of the private nonprofit to add more conservative programs onto PBS may violate federal law."

www.drudgereport.com...

I'm not real sure how this could be a violation of federal law, but the allegation is disturbing. Do democrats think PBS is some sacred place? The allegation is quite telling of the mindset. What do they fear and what has been happening at PBS for the last 40 years? I smell a special procecutor.....where's Ken Star?

Sorry "politico" isn't my thing, but found the story to be curious. Thought PBS was a federally owned thing, not a private corp.

you have to remember that any speaking out against the us government and it's policies is fast becomeing illigal. don't you know that the government knows best? they are only looking out for everyone's best interest (as long as you are a corperation at any rate). any disention will soon be labled as terrorists after all if you don't agree then you must at least suport terrorisim.

Federal funds = my tax money. I am NOT in favor of continued
support of PBS. Let 'em get corporate sponsors like everyone
else. Considering how LEFT they lean .. it's the only honest thing
to do with them. They certainly are not bipartisan. Not at all.

I'm sure we can find out more shortly. The Democratic members of the oversight committee seem to just be asking for an investigation, and the Chairman is already defending himself.

A CPB spokesman could not be reached for comment. But in a recent interview with the LOS ANGELES TIMES, Tomlinson defended his efforts to expand conservative perspectives on PBS, saying he merely wants to increase the network's audience.

It'll center on what they meant by finding actions of CPB Chairman Kenneth Tomlinson ``disturbing'' and ``extremely troubling.''

There's the hidden story here.

For me, I'd take issue with either liberal or conservative "perspectives" on PBS as relates to our government or politics in general. I'm sure that's what's illegal. The government can't make taxpayers pay for propaganda meant to directly target taxpayers. (Though some nice offshore redirects do exist as mastered by the Bush administration already.)

I obviously don't buy the prevalent Rush Limbaugh argument from insanity that Sesame Street, Blues Clues, Where in the World is Carmen Santiego and BBC sitcoms are anti-Republican or pro-Democrat.

Paranoid delusions of meglomania. Of course, if PBS hires political conservatives to specifically support the Bush administration, that's a problem. Just as it would be if they did it to support a Democrat.

Do democrats think PBS is some sacred place?

Not for nothing, but it sort of is (obviously not actually 'sacred' tho). Its the public broadcasting system, its not supposed ot be Liberal, Socialist, Fascist, Communist, or Conservative. Putting people who are out and out conservatives, especially if the open intent is to 'balance' it or to get the 'conservative ideology' a voice on it, might very well be illegal, just as illegal as having out and out Liberals broadcasting on it with the intent of providing a liberal point of view.

I mean, I understand that many conservatives will complain that PBS is liberal, but they can't demonstrate that its designed that way, and often this 'liberal' aspect of it doesn't amount to very much. Take Bill Moyers for example. Obviously, this guy is pretty liberal. But so what, he wasn't hired as a liberal, he was hired because he does a good job. I mean, the work he did with Campbell is more than enough to hire him, regardless of his private politics.

Well, Cookie Monster is BLUE! BLUE STATE! EVIL! Wait, isn't Elmo Red?

Yes, BLUE's Clues, they have any red in it?

Documentary on the Civil War and the Civil Rights Movement, well, I guess that is kinda Pro-Democrat since it is against slavery, Jim Crow Laws, blacks second class citizens/property.

I don't get it, how the hell is it left wing? I never seen big bird on their going on about freedom, women rights, black rights, rights of everyone, not just the ones who own the GOP, so how is it left wing?

Oh Sure Oscar never complains about not being able to kill little kids or mentally handicapped people, so I guess that is anti-republican. Ok, to make SS more balanced we will have Oscar Minute where Oscar can say anything the GOP wants, like kill jews, kill blacks, kill kids, kill retards, kill anyone who doesn't bow down before Bush&Co.

I don't get how you figure that freeing the slaves after the War of Northern Aggression was pro-democrats. Last I checked, Lincoln was a Republican.

I don't understand how you can label racism and killing jews, kids, etc. as GOP goals.

Maybe PBS should stick to Sesame Street, cooking shows and nature shows. Maybe they should be more apolitical than they now are.

And painting! You forgot painting! Love Joy of Painting, except Bob Ross is dead now.

Also, Lincoln was a democrat, he supported Federal Power over State Power, the whole point of being a republican is that the USA is 50 nations, while the point of being a democrat is that the USA is 1 nation. Lincoln believed the nation to be one.(also, in gov. class you learn how political parties are formed, IE Federalists vs Anti-Federalists into republicans, free soilers, constitutionists, democrat republicans, then itno demcrats alone, and all the other parties.

Anyways, as said, Democrat is based on Fed Power over state, and republicans are State Power over Fed Power. Or 50 nations vs 1 nation made up of 50 states.

Edit: DTOM, are you kidding? Do you know who called for the Supreme Court to be executed after the SC made executing kids and mentally handicapped people illegal. Clue, wasn't the Elephant Men.....
