Thought this would sum it up pretty well.

"Supreme Court says pornography is anything without artistic merit that causes sexual thought, that's their definition, essentially. No artistic merit, causes sexual thought. Hmm. Sounds like... every commercial on television, doesn't it?

You know, when I see those two twins on that Doublemint commercial-I'm not thinking of gum. I am thinking of chewing, maybe that's the connection they're trying to make.

What? You've all seen that Busch beer commercial, where the girl in the short hot-pants opens the beer bottle on her belt buckle, leaves it there, and it foams over her hand and over the bottle and the voice over goes, "Get yourself a BUSCH." Hmm. You know what that looks like, nah, no way.

I'll tell you the commercial they'd like to do, if they could, and I guarantee you, if they could, they'd do this, right here.
Here's the woman's face, beautiful.
Camera pulls back, naked breast.
Camera pulls back, she's totally naked.
Legs apart.
Two fingers, right here, and it just says,
Drink Coke.
Now I don't know the connection here, but goddamn if Coke isn't on my shopping list that week."

It cracks me up how strict this stuff is now. Its only been like that for about the last 10 years. I remember in highschool, we could see any movie we wanted. Nobody carded us. Nobody cared.

Now, thanks to bored soccer moms with nothing better to do than bitch and moan about seeing a 16 year old kid watching "Saving Private Ryan", we have to police the theaters. Its crap.

I have an 8 year old that I let watch South Park. I have no problem letting him watch what he wants. South Park at least almost always carries a postive message at the end. He actually learns a little somethin there from time to time. I'd rather him watching that, then Pokemon or Yu-gi-oh. Those shows are a complete waste of time.

Ahh, but back to movies. I dont see what the big deal is. Movies are entertainment. Nothing more or less. Any kid over the age 13 knows that. Why the emphasis so much on this baffles me.

When my 15 year old wants to go see Texas Chainsaw Massacre with his friends, my wife looks at me and says..

and off he goes...and comes home normal...people need to lighten up.

I'm with you 100% Spliff.

It's always amazed me how most kids are raised by their parents, like pets or houseplants rather than prepared for the sh*t storm of life they will soon face. IMO, it's not too smart of an idea to bring up your precious darlings, sheltered so much that the idea of an "R" movie causes them to giggle and feel naughty in their teens. Imagine the horror they'll experience when the worst they've seen is some boobies on the big screen, yet sitting next to them in math class is some 14 y/o mother of two who'll take 'em from a boy to a man for some help in cheating on the next quiz!!

Do your kids a favor, those of you who are either currently parents or planning on producing a puppy or two in the future. Teach them how to be strong on their own and take of themselves. Look to the Wild of Nature when needed. Ever see some of them give birth?? Sucker flops out on the dirt and is expected to walk within the first hour or it's a no go situation. It may seem harsh, but believe me, when you see those poor pampered & sheltered one's later in the real world without Mom and Dad's protection, you'll realize the truth behind "Tough Love" and why, when it's done correctly, it really is for Their Own Good!!

Personally, I'm not real sure the high-ranking on the Titanic is because it's a chick flic. I'm a chick and I have to tell you I tolerated "the love story" in order to see the film. The special effects and the powerful way the movie got across how terrifying it had to have been on that ship are what made me really love the Titanic. But I absolutely hated the "story" super-imposed on it. Not all chicks are that easily amused

Bravo...well said...I salute you .. Well done.

You must sometimes find yourself a square peg in a round hole...not going along with the chick flick agenda.

On the male side..one of the worst movies...I've seen is....."Top Gun" I found it horrible. So many of the fellows think this is a great movie.

Thanks ,

I own Top Gun and believe me, the LAST thing I pay attention to is the love story aspect. Show me JETS!! Show me GUNS!! Blow something UP!!

And everytime I see that movie, I wanna learn to fly an A-4F or an A-6. Is it just me?

Just the fact that the oldest profession in the world is prostitution, should tell you that sex sells. Movies, books, everything. Deep down sex is our deepest motivating factor, right next to food, and shelter. As for the ratings in movies, I think you can make a movie "sexy" without getting an R, rating. IMO we need more sexual things in movies, instead of all the killing and butchering.

No. I always thought that "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" could have been immeasureably improved with a lightsaber fight and a sixpack of ninjas. Forget "Moonstruck" and "Sleepless in Seattle." Give me "Lord of the Rings" or any Kurosawa film or "To Kill a Mockingbird" or "Van Helsing", etc, etc.

And as for "sex sells"... let's be brutal. It usually means "Nekkid wimmin sells." While I'm sure it probably sells to heterosexual males, it just don't do nuffin for heterosexual females (and it makes for lovely feminist rants.)

Exactly! It struck me a few years ago -- I was waiting in a line, and looked at the magazine stand: 9 out of 10 publications had the word "s*e*x" right on the cover.

I mean, come on, needs we say more...

Remember:

All the Bruce Lee movies were rated "R". At the time, any movie that showed kicks to the head was automatically rated "R".

His movies, though classics, seem kind of tame compared to today's standards.

You may right about that Byrd. Perhaps just a slight adjustment is needed. Ok, try this:

Same thing as before, only add in 2 things,
1.) A Deliciously Creamy Swiss Chocolate just as she bites into it and
2.) Have her wearing a Really Great Pair of Shoes.

That should do it I think. While those same Women may continue to dislike it as they did before, they will be unable to follow through when Purchasing Time comes and once again choose Coke over Pepsi. Those two key elements above will be cleverly hidden within their mind on a level that is beyond their control.

Please...PLEASE tell me she isn't going to do an ad for yogurt in a squeeze tube!

Okay, concerning sex on magazine covers. Maybe we need to find out which magazines actually SELL the most copies, then find a sex corrolation.

Remember when Esquire was strictly a men's magazine? Now, they're downright CLASSY, with GREAT stories! What did they get rid of? The sex.

I am confused at all this for many reasons. Namely the blatant sexual nature of almost every movie, tv show, music video, and commercial, should be enough to let you know that sex does in fact sell.

If that is a bit too vague for you, then perhaps the estimated 57.0 Billion that the porn industry makes anually (globally) could be an indicator to how much it does sell. Maybe I realize this because I live in California, which incidentally is the porn capitol of the USA.

Here in the USA we account for an estimated 12.0 billion, or 21% of the global porn market. Another little interesting fact is Porn revenue is larger than all combined revenues of all professional football, baseball and basketball franchises. US porn revenue also exceed the combined revenues of ABC, CBS, and NBC (6.2 billion)

To any of those who think that sex does not sell, I say: Open your eyes already.

Spliff--I agree with you for the first time--let your kids watch what they want or seem to need to watch, but I'm getting sick of the moms and dads that are quick to blame entertainment for the crimes and failures of their kids.

I was just looking at a list of the Top 100 All-Time Grossing Movies and noticed that only one movie in the top ten had an "R" rating. That movie was The Passion Of The Christ! The next Movie with an "R" rating finally comes up at #24, Which is Matrix: Reloaded.

I can't go back and forth from here to my list, but I'm betting that "R" rated movies make up a small portion of the top 100. (MUCH smaller than the 1/3 you might get from the G/PG/R logic.) Which begs the question, "Does Sex really sell?" It doesn't seem to, in Filmland.

If it doesn't sell there, where else DOESN'T sex sell?

Yes it does sell as them most profintable most is
