Tony Blair has said education is the top priority for Labour, while brushing off personal attacks from the Tories.

He said Labour wanted to give every child a chance to succeed, while the Tories favoured a "two-tier system".

Labour would put every penny into state schools, he said, while the Tories would spend £2bn subsidising a few at private schools. The Tories deny this.

They have attacked Labour over truancy rates while the Lib Dems say they will boost specialised teaching.

Answering personal attacks from Tory leader Michael Howard, he said: "Let them go negative, negative, negative.
