An Afghan on the United States' list of most wanted drug kingpins, who allegedly provided weapons to the Taliban in exchange for protection, has been arrested, authorities said Monday. A DEA statement said the suspect is charged with leading an international heroin-trafficking organization responsible for manufacturing and transporting heroin in Afghanistan and Pakistan and then arranging for more than $50 million worth of the drug to be imported into the United States and other countries.

An Afghan on the United States' list of most wanted drug kingpins, who allegedly forged a deal with the Taliban in exchange for protection, has been arrested, authorities said Monday.

Bashir Noorzai was in custody in New York and was awaiting arraignment later Monday on charges he tried to smuggle 500 kilograms of heroin with a value of more than $50 million into the United States, authorities said.

An indictment alleges Noorzai and "has a symbiotic relationship" with the Taliban, U.S. Attorney David Kelley said at a news conference.

Authorities said he was arrested while traveling to the United States, but declined to give details. Kelley also refused to comment on reports that the defendant has ties to the al-Qaida terrorist network.

This story has two possible good sides to it. First, it will keep drugs off the street and second if he does in fact have ties to al-Quaida that would mean more funds have been cutoff to Osama and his thugs, which could help to end the current conflict sooner. I see that as a win win situation.

Now it would be nice if they can convince the new Afgan government to destroy all the drug crops. All anyone can do is hope of that ever happening.

If anyone really wants to fight the war on drugs, they should duke it out with the Northern Alliance in Afghanistan... Oh wait, these folks are actually the US allies in that country and helped us fight Taliban! Karzai is in their pocket as well.

In view of the above, I find the announcement hypocritical. Taliban issued a fatwa against drugs, and if you google it a little, you'll see that they were pretty successfull at fighting the problem. Northern Alliance, on the other hand, is a bunch of real, real, real traffickers.

This guy must not have been on the TSCW 'approved list of importers', or maybe he was a throw-away, to give the public the impression that the US Government actually wants to interdict the supply of heroin to the states; not just control it and a large part of the population through mind control induced by the use of the devil's drug.
