Why must people fear what they don't understand?
The same reason some people are afraid of the dark, or getting attacked by a bear...they can't control what they don't understand so it brings fear.
Some people embrace the fear of the unknown in order to gain control of it, other simply shun what they fear out of weakness or lack of ambition.
That is what seperates the hero from the peasant.
