Personally, I wouldn't care to march in the barrel up position. If the march was rifles at ready, I'd rather carry in pointing down than up, your not using your arms the entire time, and it certainly fatigues them.

Course, I've only handled heavy old rifles, so I couldn't say about the new composite jobs.
