Wormholes-What can escape?

Wormholes (a bend in space-time fabric with a hole thru it basically) have often been theoretically been thought of as time machines and instant transportation. But my question is... how could u get through one? If matter is flowing in through both sides and trapped at the "neck" then how could lets say a spaceship reach andromeda in a second? I was just wondering.
