This was interesting bomber project started in the early 60's and first flown in the early 70's. Only one protoype was built and flown. The plans for the bomber were for it to have a speed of 3200 km/h and a range of 6000 km. It was cancelled though. It is really to bad, this bomber would have been really impressive. It had some advanced features such as quad redundant fly-by-wire controls and construction of titanium and steel alloys. It also had a drop nose.

Beautiful aircraft.

I also found it fascinating that both project began around 1960 +/-.
The XB-70 Valkyrie rolled out in May 1964 in a California North American Hanger.

And was flight tested in September of the same year.
Both where beautiful designs and well worth mentioning.

That is a neat plane, but the cockpit looks highly UNAERODYNAMIC.

It's very like Concorde: one remembers the ill-fated "Concordski" -perhaps the Bolsheviks stole this from the West at the same time.

A decent read and lots of links here -and the pictures above and rather more:

The guidance system technology was, I believe, kept and transferred to the Su-27.

The angle of "nose" changes when in flight.. it only points to the ground during landing or when "grounded" (in the ground..)

The nose: as I posted, very "Concordski".

A nice looking craft.

A pity it was scraped in the 70's

Although this thread is nearly 20 years old, I should mention that the Sukhoi design bureau proposed a T-4 design study with swing wings, the T-4M (aka 100I),which did not progress beyond the design phase. Because of the placement of its jet engines, the T-4M would have looked like a B-1 minus the horizontal stabilizers.
