A very capable brown-water navy, I have to say.

Their surface vessels seem to be of pretty high-caliber.

I'm interested to see how the new phased array radar syetm they have developed turns out...

Apparently every new ship built is more advanced than the previous... they are not really building fleets of one specific model anymore.

For instance the new Type 51-c air defence destroyer features a different hased radar array to the guided missle DDG type 52-c

Whether this is due to the different roles of the ships or simply experimentation remains to be seen.

I would probably rate the PLAN green water... not a blue water force, but not as limited as a coastal defence fleet either.

P>S sorry for the poor translation... it's a quick babelfish effort

The PLA have said that they could take Taiwan and handle up to 2 American carrier groups with the current millitary.

Any more than 2 Carrier groups would prove too much though.

By 2010 they estimate that the force will be far more effective and most of the old luda class will have been replaced

An american carrier group comes with 2 aegis equiped CGs and 3 aegis equiped ddgs. Also a DD, AOE, and 2 ffgs and 2 SSN and around 100 aircraft

All of them we will assume outclass the PLAN's equipment.

When you say Green water do you mean that its a good naval fleet to protect its borders but not good enough to go into the ocean with an american or british fleet,

IS 2 carriers not enough to protect Taiwan, sure if china used there whole entire military 2 carriers wouldnt be enough but China wouldnt throw everything doen there would they??

I seriously think they are stretching it when they say they can take on two U.S carriers at once. Even if they are little more than a brown-water navy, the fact they still are behind the U.S. Navy means they cannot effectively take us on.

I think their current Navy could take Taiwan without any U.S. interventions. Taiwan is not that far away and the Chinese seem capable to me.
Also I think as time goes on and their tech gets more advance I think the Chinese will begin to cut the numbers of its navy, because nowadays one new ship can replace 3 old ones.

They're a purely defensive naval brown water force..
They intend it to be that way..

Taiwan fits perfectly into this capability..
The USN will not be able to stop China from occupying the island..
The all the PLAN has to do is dig in and play the US into a long drawn out battle, and a quick stalemate..

The PLAN has an impressive underwater fleet actually IMO, how many subs in all?

Some of those photos with ship stick my eye as they look photo edit, partial blur and some parts clear, cant be so bad lences to take such pics and one pic look as if crew and some other parts were added and backround was different color.

No I think china still cant do battle with the USN, they have a long way to go before they become a blue water navy.

90% of those subs are AIP subs not nuclear subs that can be a threat in the deep water.

i had heard that only one Submarine per US naval Fleet, Is this True? If the US decided to defend Taiwan and send 2 carrier groups Would they really only send 2 subs one for each Carrier?

You're talking about strike groups, not fleets. And yes, that is true, one submarine for every Carrier Strike Group.

Two subs pack a lot of firepower, mind you.

I am not sure if they only have 1 per fleet but if they need more there is no reason why they won't send more. I think they already got some subs near the area...there was a news of a US subs having a little accidents near the US military base if I remember correctly.

There are other ways to hunt submarines that are very effective as well such as anti-sub aircrafts. Submarines are much slower and therefore they might not even be the most effective way to hunt other subs in the Taiwan strait area.

Trust us Americans, there is only one submarine per Carrier Battle Group.

I see the U.S deploying at least four carriers to the theater, so that's six submarines to cover a very small area of water. More than sufficient.

I know my military.

Would they really deploy Four Carriers to Taiwan to defend it?

So lets say that there is Six subs China has more then Six Subs, what if china wants to really make an impact and they send like 10-20 subs and try to take out all four carriers, Dont you think that the US would send more subs when Fighting such a big Enemy, 2 subs is sufficient for like the persian Gulf,

Its probably just me, maybe 6 subs is enough but it doesnt sound like it to me

You're right, it doesn't sound like a lot. However, each Los Angeles-class SSN packs a ton of firepower, more than any current Chinese submarine (except for their SSBNs). Also, the small theater means that the Chinese submarines will be much easier to detect so the four subs and ASW aircraft would have a simpler time finding the Chinese submarines.

And yes, they would most likely send four carriers, two in the East China Sea and two in the South China Sea. The position of Taiwan means that land-based air power is pretty much out of the question, so Taiwan will be the first war since World War II in the Pacific where carrier-based air power takes the forefront. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised to see carrier-based air power be used exclusively in Taiwan. Four carriers provide an incredible amount of air power to cover Taiwan over 20 times. Remember, all they need to do is defend Taiwan.

How many carriers are in the pacific Fleet, i here that china is building to counter the Huge and powerful pacific fleet but just how big is it for china to try and build so much?

is the pacific fleet what they would use to defend taiwan,

What would happen if china decided to drop a nuke on those carriers,

I know im asking alot ??? personally Im all for defending Taiwan since the US has said many times that it would defend Taiwan so i think we should stick to our guns on that, But its been a long time since we had a confrontation with such a big country, i would hate it if we lost a carrier, and if somehow we lost all four of em that would drasticaly hurt our navy wouldnt it?

I really dont know how big our navy is but i have heard from a friend of mine who is in the navy that the US actually has more active subs in the water then they make known

The U.S. Pacific Fleet has six Carrier Strike Groups:

U.S.S. Kitty Hawk (CV-63)
U.S.S. Nimitz (CVN-68)
U.S.S. Carl Vinson (CVN-70)
U.S.S. Abraham Lincoln (CVN-72)
U.S.S. John C. Stennis (CVN-74)
U.S.S. Ronald Reagan (CVN-76)

The Pacific Fleet is obviously what they would use to defend Taiwan. That's why it's called the Pacific Fleet. LOL More specifically, they would use the Seventh Fleet since they handle WESTPAC and Asia.

I doubt China would go nuclear, not on a carrier no less. But if they did, let's just say you better do whatever you want to do and prepare for the End of the World As We Know It.

I also doubt we would lose all four. At the most, we'd lose just one. But even if it was just one, the affects of that loss would be drastic. That's about 70 fewer aircraft to liberate and defend Taiwan. Not to mention the aircraft carrier, the most powerful and formidable weapon ever in history, get's destroyed. That would be a huge blow to America's ego and a horrible blow to the moral of Taiwan's citizens, the ROC military, and definitely our own troops. It'll be a huge momentum swing for the Chinese. It may also force the U.S. to start going "outside the box" with politics and diplomacy to try to resolve the mess.

Still, China's gonna need to go a long way before it can actively challenge the U.S. Navy on the seas. So for now, China's threat to U.S. naval vessels is through land and air.

The U.S. Navy is much smaller than it's late Cold War days, but one thing it has a lot of is submarines. Close to 100 of them.

Blue water capability is not required by the PLAN to take/defend taiwan..
The PLAN order of battle revolves around the annexation of Taiwan IMO.
