The Arjun is made to look bad by the indian media, although it isin't.

the indian media just love DRDO busting.

no one knows how many optics, electronics niggles chinese, russian tanks had, because the totalitarian communists control the media.

The integrated digital fire control system installed in the Arjun Mk.1 MBT consists of a laser rangefinder, ballistic computer, thermal imaging night sight, meteorological sensor, stabilised panoramic sight for the tank commander, stand-by (articulated) sighting telescope, GPS and an electronic gate to ensure a first round hit probability. The third generation director type, fire control system with a 120mm gun electronically slaved to the sights, enables the gunner to locate, identify, track, range and engage moving targets while its moving. This gives a high first round hit probability. The gunner's main sight consists of a day sight, thermal sight, laser rangefinder and stabilised head common, to all three channels. The common sighting head mirror is stabilised in elevation and azimuth. The day sight has dual magnification while the thermal imager provides a night vision facility to the gunner and the commander to observe and engage targets under conditions of total darkness and smoke. The laser rangefinder is integral with the gunner's sight.

The panoramic sight enables the commander to effect an all-round surveillance on the battlefield without moving his eyes from the sight and without being disturbed by the motion of the turret. The field of view is stabilised with the help of a two-axis rate gyro mounted on the platform of the head mirror. The sight has dual magnification. The ballistic computer, computes the gun laying data based on information provided by a number of sensors mounted in the vehicle and on manual inputs and provides the signals corresponding to the tangent elevation and azimuth offset. To increase the accuracy of the firing, the fire control system has a coincidence window that allows firing of the main armament only when it reaches the desired position as dictated by the computer. The 120mm rifled gun will fire APFSDS (Armour Piercing Fin Stabilized Discarding Sabot), HESH (High-Explosive Squash Head), HE (High-Explosive), HEAT (High-Explosive Anti-Tank) and smoke rounds. A special 120mm anti-helicopter round is under development as well. All 120mm rounds use a semi combustible cartridge case.

The 120mm rifled gun is made of ESR steel and is fitted with a thermal sleeve and a fume extractor. The thermal sleeve prevents irregular temperature distribution on to the tube due to the weather influences. A new high energy propellant is used in the 120mm rifled gun to give a higher muzzle velocity and therefore greater penetration characteristics. A 7.62mm machine gun is coaxial with the main armament and a 12.7mm AA machine gun is fitted for anti-aircraft defence. Production Arjun MBTs will also have a new composite laminate armour called Kanchan. This will be produced by Mishra Dhatu Nigam Limited (MDNL). The tank also has a NBC (Nuclear-Biological-Chemical) system that is designed & built by BARC and a night vision device built by IRDE. To further enhance combat survivability, the tank has an auto-fire detection & suppression system. Ammunition is also stowed in water tight containers to reduce the risk of fire.

It may be noted that India has a Memorandum of Understanding with Chinese National Space Agency on cooperation in the application of space for peaceful uses. A team from China has visited India and an Indian team visited China earlier to share the experiences of both the countries and to identify areas of cooperation in the application of space technology.
The visit of Chinese Premier today is expected to provide further impetus to explore further areas of cooperation in the area of space applications.

the arjun might be a powerful tank but it cost more than a abram

not to Imagine how much it cost to develop. how many bridges in india can handle this? 59 tons x 10 tanks+ thats goin to be hard to support on bridges. waste of money if your just going paki shooting.

read history of t-98.

the t-90 was developed to counter t-72 but after the end of the cold war the program was temporaryed stopped. but after the cold war the project was restarted and the t-90II was born. but in 1995 the russian showed us there new t-80U and the program went into a complete redesign that ened up as the t-98. Aslo the t-98 is on par with the abram with everthing except with armour but the t-98G with improved armour may have the same level of armour protection as the m1-a2

when did i say copy

i said that the russians showed us there t-80U in a military demonstration. and the t-80U was better than the t-90II so we had to redesign to beat t-80U

quote from sinodefence.com

The original design target of the Chinese third generation MBT was as a counter to the Soviet T-72, but the changing requirements shifted the development towards a much more sophisticated machine. The later design criteria of the Type 98 was aiming at challenging the U.S. M1A1 Abrams, while certain aspects of the actually performance of the Type 98 is approaching the standard of the M1A2.

that was only the t-98 but not the t-98G that has a armour upgrade and dunnon about inside.

also is that the same army that was forced to buy the 120 arjuns???
the army didn't it like the tank they wanted t-90s

the chinese horde

pic of laser

another pic

this is about the laser on t-98

The turret-mounted system carried by the Type 98 is very similar to a tripod-mounted laser weapon that was seen for the first time at an arms exhibition in Manila in 1995. Identified at the exhibition as the "Laser Interference Device," it matched the description of a known Chinese laser weapon called the ZM-87. According to its promotional information, one of the ZM-87's major uses is to "injure or dizzy targeted individuals." The ZM-87 can reportedly injure the human eye at 2-3 kms, this rising to over 5 kms using a 7-power magnification device. Additionally, short-term "flaring blind-ness" can be inflicted on the human eye at up to 10 kms. The ZM-87 and the laser weapon carried by the Type 98 should not be confused with electro-optical "dazzlers" like those turret-mounted de-vices used by the Iraqis during Operation Desert Storm. Those Iraqi devices (some of which are believed to have been supplied by the Chinese), are designed to confuse the tracking systems of Western/NATO anti-tank guided missiles (ATGMs), without directly attacking the controlling optics or the eyesight of the weapon's gunner. The available photos of the Type 96 have also confirmed that the laser weapon can be elevated to a higher angle than the tank's main gun, indicating that the engagement of attack helicopters is possible.

chinawhite are you seriously trying to say that the Type 98 is better than the Abrams and the Challenger 2?Because if you are then you know nothing about weaponry.

better no. same class yes

this is about t-98

westpoint23

dont think that the M1A1/ M1A2 Abrams can handle the t-721m that iraq had in 1991 that it can handle a t-98.

1. its not a t-72
2. the t-72 that iraq had, had underpowered guns
3. you werent fighting a organized armoured force.
4. by the time america went in (after bombing iraq back to the stone age) they were facing a group of thugs with tanks.
5. you also has a numerial advantage

the t-98 was designed to compete with western tanks.

The M1A1/2 Abrams main battle tank is manufactured by General Dynamics Land Systems (GDLS). The first M1 tank was produced in 1978, the M1A1 in 1985 and the M1A2 in 1986. 3,273 M1 tanks were produced for the US Army. 4,796 M1A1 tanks were built for the US Army, 221 for the US Marines and 555 co-produced with Egypt. Egypt has ordered a further 200 M1A1 tanks with production to continue to 2005. 77 M1A2 tanks have been built for the US Army, 315 for Saudi Arabia and 218 for Kuwait. For the M1A2 Upgrade Program, over 600 M1 Abrams tanks are being upgraded to M1A2 configuration. Deliveries began in 1998.

wtf according to this there is only 677 m1a2?

Perhaps you should shut up and make an effort to understand what the guy's saying, rather than selecting a few words and constructing a reason to jump on him using your infinite wisdom (more like stupidity, but I'll call it wisdom to be nice). He never said the T-98 is better than the Abrams.

Everyone else may not be as knowledgable about weaponry like you are, but from what I've seen, everyone else certainly are smarter than you are.

I'm seeing that. Let's all try to get along and be civil else we'll have to close this thread. I can see how the right tank at the right time in the right conditions can beat any other tank. Just present your points and try not to spin off into flame wars.

I apologize, I wasn't trying to spin off into a flame war. In fact, if there's anything I try to avoid, it's a flame war. I'll show more restraint and ignore the ignorant ones from now on.
