Anybody else remember 1974? "OMG the oil is running out, quick buy a little Japanese car (still got it), pile horsedoo in a vat and make methane for the stove (been there, done that, 'waste' of time and money), go solar photovoltaic 12 volts (fun, but heavy on lead-acid battery replacement), ride your bike 10 miles each way to work in the rain and the snow and the sun, plow up 40 acres of habitat to make gasahol... Jimmy Carter panicked us all over Iran and Peak Oil back then; result: we're still pumping (the stuff is abiogenic and probably makes up a good percentage of the mass of the Earth) and a bunch of us have Great Depression ecohippie memories that served no purpose but to inflate the price- and profits- of Big Oil.

Imagine if the oil did run out in ten years. Would that be a bad thing? Ask any dolphin. Or Charlie Tuna.

You are right in a sense. The 1970s peak was a real peak. In the mid 1970s US oil production peaked and has been in decline ever since, so we had to get involved in the middle east.

Eventually there will be a global peak and we will adjust to Uranium. Then there will be a uranium peak and we'll have to adjust again based on our technology of the time.

The global oil peak will not throw us into the stone ages like many people say, but there will be just as much, if not much more, upheaval than there was in the peak of the 1970s.

As for the tuna, they are probably stuck with us humans for longer than they'd like. We have our ups and downs but tend to hang around awhile.
