why is the price of oil so high?

are there more countries using oil now than back in the 90s because i dont remember the prices being so high back then.

You have to adjust for inflation.

It peaked around '80-'81 at just under $95 (2005 dollars).
Gas averaged just under $3.00 (2005 dollars)
