dialing 911 gives you the police...

but, dialing 811 gives you the police too...

did you know this???

and, why does this happin???

isn't one number good enough???

If you dial 411 or 0 you can get the police too. Just have to ask the operator. Not trying to be a wise guy but it's true.
And in NYC I think their 211 or 311 will connect you if you ask.

hmmm ....maybe different no. serves different purposes....... or maybe 811 is for backup when the other no. is down?

In the UK, 112 gets you the emergency services too. (Note to self, stop playing with phone)

I have a theory that this is a left over from the old rotary dial where 999 took longer and all MP's and aristocrats wre given the 'real' emergency number.

Maybe because the people dialing could be pannicking and hit 8 by mistake. So this way they get the police without having to spend time dialing again. Its all about time.
