FORT BRAGG, N.C. Apr 6, 2005 — Ruled competent to stand trial, Sgt. Hasan Akbar is accused of a fatal grenade attack on his fellow soldiers in the
opening days of the Iraq war.
Jury selection of 12 enlisted soldiers and officers was to begin Wednesday under heavy security. The case that marks the first time since the Vietnam
War a soldier has been prosecuted for the murder or attempted murder of another soldier during wartime.
Akbar, 33, is charged with stealing grenades from a Humvee and using them and a firearm in a March 2003 attack on fellow members of the 101st Airborne
Division at Camp Pennsylvania in Kuwait.

This trial should be fairly short. Sgt. Akbar has confessed to the murders repeatedly. If he had a problem with participating in the operations in
Iraq, he could have and should have put in to be identified as a Contentious Objector. Instead, he goes all the way to Kuwait and then plans out the
act and murders his fellow soldiers. Remember, especially during war time, a military person RELIES on his partner. The thought that the person
standing next to you who is supposed to be protecting your back is going to “shoot you in the back” is unthinkable. Sgt Akbar should receive the
Death Penalty which he is eligible for since he performed his crime during wartime.
