BAGHDAD, Iraq - Insurgents attacked the Abu Ghraib prison west of Baghdad, injuring 44 U.S. forces and 12 prisoners, the U.S. military said Sunday, while six people were killed elsewhere in Iraq following a period of declining attacks that had raised hopes the insurgency might be weakening.

At least 40 militants fired rocket-propelled grenades and set off two car bombs at the infamous prison as darkness fell Saturday night, 1st Lt. Adam Rondeau said. Soldiers and Marines stationed at the detention facility responded, and the resulting clash and gunfight lasted about 40 minutes. No one escaped.

The insurgency simply has to run out of steam at some point. With the Sunni minority starting to play ball, there are less and less places for these foreign fighters to seek refuge. They like the Shiites have come to realize that the insurgency is there to create chaos and could care less if a few innocent Iraqi's go down to further thier aims.

Reports continue to differ as to the number of wounded. Here is the BBC update:

Heavily armed militants have launched an audacious attack on Iraq's notorious Abu Ghraib prison, wounding 44 US troops and 12 prisoners inside.
They struck after dark, targeting an outbuilding with a car bomb and following up with another bomb, gunfire and grenades, US officials said.

According to the US military, at least 40 militants were involved.

One way or another this will be over soon. Either attacks will slow to a trickle or there will be a massive upsurge in attacks, and renewed public support at which point we should probably just get out of Iraq.

A firefight lasted for over 40 minutes and they only have one reported death?

BAGHDAD, Iraq - About 50 insurgents were wounded and at least one was killed during last week's attack on Abu Ghraib prison, the U.S. military said Monday. It refused to say whether any militants were taken into custody.

You know what I think is the reason for this. I think they are running out of insurgents and the only way they can get more is to get those that are in jail out.
