Here's another link of this latest unsettling event. I guess they don't believe resistance is futile.

WASHINGTON - A group of 40 to 60 insurgents attacked the Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq late Saturday in a well-coordinated assault that inflicted 18 American casualties, U.S. military officials told NBC News.

U.S. officials, who spoke with NBC News in Washington, said insurgents attacked with two car or truck bombs, 40 mortars and an intense ground assault.

News sources are currently reporting 20 US soliders 'hurt', but the number of insurgents is still being quoted at '40-60'. That figure apperas to have come from US spokesman Lt Col Rudisill.

The news is propagating widely now: News links via Google

It was reported on Sky news

Heres a link MASS ATTACK ON IRAQ PRISON HITS US TROOPS

At least 20 US soldiers have been injured after Iraqi insurgents attacked Abu Ghraib prison outside Baghdad.

Dozens of Iraqi fighters stormed the building, detonating two suicide car bombs and firing rocket-propelled grenades.

US forces managed to repel the force after an hour of fighting, the US military said.

At least 12 prisoners at the jail were wounded in the attack, some severely.

There is nothing in the news of this event because of the John Paul death which is blocking out all other news events. However sometimes the news station will mention it.

I was thinking the same thing.

"At least 12 prisoners at the jail were wounded in the attack, some severely."
"A mortar strike on the prison on April 20 last year left 22 inmates dead."

Are they trying to free or kill the inmates?

Maybe they are after the al-Zarqawi aide that has joint American-Jordanian citizenship. I don't know where he is being held, but found this link from CNN.

Sadly, this was an accident waiting to happen. At least as of late 2004 (not certain of the situation these days) the confinement facilities in Iraq and Afghanistan were very poorly staffed and guarded. Only makes sense to attack a compound so poorly defended - especially when many of your comrades are inside waiting to take advantage of a favorable situation.

Falcon, 100 not only wounded but dead? If there are even that many soldiers on exterior guard duty at that facility (well maybe at AGP b/c it's been so publicized) I'd be surprised.

BTW here at 19:47 EST they just finally took a break from Pope coverage to announce the attack against AGP (as I typed this) - just a kindly headsup.

I suspect my source have seen this article:
msnbc.msn.com...
...because they say "18 casualities".
All other newspages says 32 wounded (20 + 12)...

Casualties can mean wounded not dead (fatality).
That MSNBC article hasn't been updated in hours so I'd go with one of the more recent articles.
We probably wont find out until tomorrow how many, if any, were killed.

Here's the most recent article I can find:

kentucky
BAGHDAD, Iraq - Insurgents attacked the Abu Ghraib prison west of Baghdad, injuring 20 U.S. forces and 12 prisoners on Saturday while six people were killed elsewhere in Iraq following a period of declining attacks that had raised hopes the insurgency might be weakening.

At least 40 militants fired rocket-propelled grenades and set off two car bombs at the infamous prison as darkness fell, 1st Lt. Adam Rondeau said. Soldiers and Marines stationed at the detention facility responded, and the resulting clash and gunfight lasted about 40 minutes.

This insurgents are getting more organized, I wonder if now they are planning to launch high scale attacks like that more often I wonder if they are the same soldiers that US has been training for military positions on the Iraqi army.

They has been successful in this type of assaults against troops and civilians.

This incident does raise serious questions: how can 40-60 heavily armed men move around and assemble themselves for such an attack? We have heard in the past about the notorious checkpoint shootings.

I can only think of three things:
1- not all areas are secured well,
2- or some personnel at checkpoints have been bribed,
3- or the insurgents were really smart and lucky.

According to the NYTimes:

Of the 20 Americans hurt, 18 had only minor wounds, Colonel Rudisill said.

Must be that body armor thing.

I also read in various reports that three Apaches were called in.

Another thing where do they get their weapons and ammo, and the bombs to blow themselves and the cars.

By this time they should have run out of the stuff if it was old weapons.

Seekerof's NYT article might explain it a little:

The assault appeared to be an attempt to break prisoners out of a part of the center that is controlled by Iraqi security forces, said Lt. Col. Guy Rudisill, a spokesman for the American detainee system in Iraq.
