Some 64 Sunni clerics has made an joint statement encouraging citizens to join the Iraqi police force and army. The clerics had once decreed that
anybody joining the force was a traitor. It stopped short of a full endorsement and it indicated that the new enlistees should not help foreign forces
against their own countrymen.
BAGHDAD, Iraq - Influential Sunni Muslim clerics who once condemned Iraqi security force members as traitors made a surprise turnaround Friday and
encouraged citizens to join the nascent police and army.
If heeded, the announcement could strengthen the image of the officers and soldiers trying to take over the fight against the Sunni-led insurgency.
Still, it wasn't a full-fledged endorsement. The edict, endorsed by a group of 64 Sunni clerics and scholars, instructed enlistees to refrain from
helping foreign troops against their own countrymen.

This is yet another sign that the Iraqi's have realized that the Al Qaeda based insurgency do not have the best interest of their people. The sooner
the police and army are of sufficient strength to deal with the insurgency, the sooner we can lowering our troop levels. The fact that it is Sunni
clerics and not Shiite is the real story here.
