Stem Cell research got a boost from Ottawa yesterday with $5.3 Million. The funding will go to study the use of stem cells to repair damaged hearts, lungs and blood vessels.
Stem cells can be found in blood, fat, bone and cells themselves.
Therapeutic cloning is not allowed in Canada. In other words they wont be growing and destroying week-old embryos to harvest stem cells.

MONTREAL - Canadian researchers will gain from $5 million in annual funding to develop the use of stem cells for therapeutic purposes.

The funding will go towards experiments on the potential use of stem cells to repair damaged hearts, lungs and blood vessels.

"To me this really is a landmark day because we're witnessing the savings of peoples' lives," said Cotler.

Adult stem cells are found in blood, marrow, cells and fat. Like the more controversial embryonic version, the cells have the potential to grow into new tissues.

Stem cells are like seed to grow a crop of new tissue, this research will help so many people. Canada is among the leaders in stem cell research, the $5.3M will defiantly give researchers a boost. So far only mice have been injected with these enhanced stem cells. Scientists in Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver and Ottawa would like to have clinical trials within the next two to five years with patients using their own stem cells to repair damaged hearts and lungs.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in Canada. The results from this research can change that. Myself being of high risk of Heart disease will be keeping a close eye on developments in stem cell research.

This is excellent news. In addition to Canada approving funding for stem cell research, Maryland is also in the process of approving funding for stem cell research to benefit the major medical research industry in a Maryland county. Calfornia is also onboard. Hopefully this support of the research will prove fruitful, and prove once and for all that stem cell research is more of a help than a simple ethical debate. Also, news of the various alternative places to harvest stem cells besides embryos will go a long way towards further support of this field.

Here is a link to a story about Maryland's stem cell funding bill:
