What are the side-effects of pornography?

Opinions, suggestions, past experiences, anything will do... Want to see where the ATS community stands on this issue.

Tennis elbow for males and carpal tunnel for the females. Also social dysfunction if the person spends too much time looking at dirty pictures.

I think one of the side-effects is sexual predators. And that leads to kidnapping of children, which usually leads to their murder. Rape is another.

Porn is a very strong thing. These images, much like violent images, are "burned" into the mind because of their nature and effect on the brain. That means that you're "stuck" with most of the images for the rest of your life. If you think about it, you can probably recall some of the pictures that you looked at when younger while even events from that time period are hard to recall. Now we get into a debate...is this a bad thing? Is remembering what that chick looked like wrong? You be the judge.

I believe pornography contributes to the objectification of females (for the guys anyway) and can increase violence tendancies towards the opposite sex. Not sure about that last part, but that's what my friend, who is a psych major, told me.

I would disagree. My partner and I watch porn, and has no violent/predatory outcomes on myself or her. It makes the whole process of lovemaking far more interesting, exciting and enjoyable. I won't go into detail, but you won't find either of us complaining.

(maybe when the PPV bill comes through.....)

Pornography can be mostly harmless under most circumstances, HOWEVER, there are 2 events that come to mind that could be attributed to porn.

Exhibit #1: My wife (before I was married to her) was invited to view a movie, it turned out to be pornography, it made her more vunerable to be taken advantage of and she was raped brutally in the process.
Exhibit #2: A sexual predator watched a porn before he (possibly) wanted to rape one of our relatives, he possibly hessitated and tried to kill her instead, she was shot twice with a 30-30 rifle and she is a cripple as result, she managed to escape, he burned the house to dispose of the evidence.

He is now in jail, the Rapist is still at large since my wife was affraid to face him in court.

I believe that porn has different effects on different personalities. There is no one set in stone response through out humanity to erotic materials.

Some may be able to blend moderate amounts of pornography into there personal lives, and find benefits in their enjoyment of each other.

Others, say an addictive personality type, may actually begin to shut out their partners in favor of the porn.

The response to the stimulus are going to vary widely. As widely as those inhabiting this earth.



me personally, the wife and I enjoy a little soft core now and then.

sexulality and any media exploring it is obviously very potent in modern times. the western "new world" still has alot of suppression to deal with. censorship is a very real phenomenon.

in contrast to the american continent, other parts of the world do not censor nude photos and erotic stories. not that porn is already a large component of the internet , but it is how "we" (western) feel about this content.

so there are varying degrees of comfort with our own and other's sexual identities, orientations and expressions.

personaly i think the more we explore such media, the better off everyone is.

there will always be individuals who have violent and deviant tendencies. to think porn spawns such behaviour is a copt.-out.

why not have what you want, then decide if you like it or not? i have faith in humanity and that the far majority of humans want to do good.

I routinely watch hardcore porn and I don't think it has negatives effects on me, I don't go out and rape women anymore than than I go out and kill people after watching a war movie.

If anything at all it gets me in the mood [like I need any help getting in the mood ]

It doesn't cause me to objectify women either, I still respect them very much.

Yeah, I know what he said. Porn can lead to excessive masturbation as a side effect.

Pornography can be just a pastime that one occasionally views or it can be as addictive as any drug. It’s just human nature that one would view these images. I remember when I was in my mid teens, my friends and I would do anything to get our hands on any kind of dirty magazine or video we could find. We were young and curious with hormones raging through our body. As you grow older though, the urges that you have as a young teen usually subside. I had one friend though, that never seemed to give up on the thrill that pornography can bring. As time went on, we would all marry and try to form a normal family life. He, however, was still addicted to porn and would spend hours scanning the net for a fix. It got so bad that he started avoiding intimate moments with his wife because they just didn’t have the same effect as the porn he would find on the net. He even went as far as to try and talk his wife into “doing” things that might make it more interesting. Unfortunately for him, she wasn’t on the same page, so troubles began to surface in their marriage. They grew apart over the last several years, as she took care of the kids, he would spend every moment away from work on pornography sites and forums. Currently, they are separated and headed for divorce because they just can’t seem to work things out and yes, he is still passing his time with pornography. It truly is sad that this addiction ruined his marriage but what is even worse is that he is still oblivious to the problem that he has.

porno side effect...

Expectations is very High...when it come to start a relationship with a person in the real world.

(Subconsciously) The person in porno picture became the standards in terms of looks and attractions. So, anybody else seems to be less or below that standard.

It would be like saying...Why settle for someone who is not as perfect as the person in the picture/movie!
