The parents of Terri Schiavo today announced that they will not seek further court orders to keep her alive, thus ending a 15 year old battle with her husband Michael Schiavo.

www.guardian.co.uk
The parents of severely brain-damaged Florida woman Terri Schiavo gave up their legal battle to keep her alive today, after state and federal courts consistently backed her husband's decision to remove her feeding tube.

Bob and Mary Schindler said they would stop asking courts to intervene after the Florida supreme court rejected their most recent appeal on Saturday. Mrs Schiavo's feeding tube was removed 10 days ago after a Florida judge agreed with her husband, Michael, that his wife would not want to be kept alive in what court-appointed doctors have described as a persistent vegetative state.

That should be the end of this round. I doubt it's the last we will hear about the case though. I bet there will be a string of lawsuits and general attempts to profit politically, from all sides.

now they will spend the next 15 years fighting for the right to bury her body rather than have her cremated. I'm sure there's a fight brewing for the malpractice money that she won. And then there's the book and tv deals to contend with.

Dang people....give it a rest...we've been told how many times now to add any conversations about Terri to one of the billion existing threads!

It's been 10 days. The damage to her body has to be intense.
To reinsert the tube now would be cruel. I figured she would
have died this weekend. This just shows she had a lot of life
in her and she was healthy, except for brain damage.

The fight over the body was mentioned. Yep. I sure hope
the parents get to bury her. Michael sure does seem afraid
of an autopsy. If he was so sure of himself, he'd be demanding
an autopsy and he'd make the medical reports available so
people would know 'the truth'. Guess he isn't sure of himself.
What's the matter Mikey .... afraid she wasn't really that badly
brain damaged? Afraid America will see the condition of her
body after being starved to death and they will then know that
it was an awful and painful way to go? Afraid that there is still
evidence of spouse abuse? If you aren't afraid ... then why
demand immediate cremation? Let the mother who gave birth
to her, have the body. Go home to your mistress and kids ...
leave Terri to her family and the medical records to the country
so we can all know that either you were right ... or that you were
wrong and should be in jail. Let's finish this. Give her parents
the body - if you have the courage.

Why would they carry out an autopsy when they know the cause of death?
At last she can rest and all the sick twisted people wanting to prolong her life can find another victim. Maybe the poor husband can finally get on with his life now.

This not funny is very tragic now the parents and siblings are force to go out and calm down the media circus outside the hospice and tell them to pray and be peaceful.

That takes away from the family right to grieve in privacy. I wonder were are the "protesters pens" and the barb wire.

Because autopsys are always supposed to be carried out when the
cause of death is unnatural. Starvation is unnatural. There are many
questions that remain unanswered. How did she get in this condition?
Was there criminal neglect involved during the past 15 years? If a
crime happened to Terri Schiavo to cause her to be there, or if a
crime happened in the past 15 years ... it has to be uncovered and
the guilty must be punished. There are many signs that point to
suspicious behavior and happenings around her. They need to be
checked into to have the guilty brought to justice or for this situation
to be put to bed once and for all.

wasn't this a result of potassium build up related to her anorexia and wasn't there a malpractice suit that resulted in a million dollar win for the family?

Michael Schivao ceased being Terri's husband long ago.....He has fathered two children and has a "common law wife." I thought polegamy was illegal in this country. I only say this because "defacto" Michael Schivao has a second family concurrent to his marriage with Terri....Strange! I wonder how anyone can now persecute the Mormons or Muslims for having muliple wives and/or families after these court decisions....at least with a clear conscience!

he never married the other woman, therefore, he is not breaking any laws.

If common law marriage was accepted as a legally binding marriage, the right wing nut cases that are so concerned with keeping this poor woman in her living misery would have another inane cause to go after, gays living together as common law marriage partners.

It is being married, Not every state has common-law-marriage, I live in IL there isnt such law. I think Florida does have it, along with the homestead act. The homestead act, lets you keep your house if you go bankrupt(sp), one of three states(I thinks its three, it might be four) that it is good to own your house out-right with no lean.

Legal aspects aside.....I think we can both agree that Michael Schivao has another family now....which presents a conflict of interest for him regarding Terri!
And whats the problem with him letting her PARENTS take care of her, since none of us have ANY proof that TERRI wanted to die....as Michael has indicated.

he hasn't broken any laws by having children with the other woman.

It's a non-issue.

I wonder, if she was jewish, would all the bible thumping nutjobs have been outside her door demanding she be fed?

I also found this to be rather funny:

The conclusion of Mahoney's news conference Sunday afternoon was disrupted by a minor scuffle among protesters jostling to get their signs within camera range.

This is all about camera time for everyone involved other than the woman's family. It is a pathetic attempt to latch onto someone's pain and suffering for gain.

another nice tidbit, from the NY Daily News:

DeLay voted to let injured father die

LOS ANGELES - House Majority Leader Tom DeLay (R-Tex.), who helped lead a congressional effort to keep Terri Schiavo alive, joined his own family 17 years ago in allowing doctors not to take extraordinary measures to keep his then-65-year-old father alive. Charles DeLay was severely injured in an accident, and as his organs began failing, the family chose not to connect him to life support, the Los Angeles Times reports. The Associated Press

I guess, when it works for advancement of your career, you keep someone alive but when it is for our own personal life, it is better to help end your loved one's suffering.

This should never have gone on this long.

Terri is Catholic which to Christian fundamentalists
is probably 'worse' than being Jewish. Still, they protested
for her, so I'm sure they'd protest for a Jewish person
as well.

Starvation is starvation... no matter what your religion is.

Indeed you are correct...he has not broken any laws....but he does have a conflict of interest! Unforntunately you lost me on the Jewish reference you made....I'm not sure what her being Jewish or not has to do with this issue. Jews beleieve in the Bible...."Old Testament" portion.......RIGHT? Please clarify!

I was talking about the case with a client and she said "if this was a jewish woman, lying in the bed, would the bible thumpers still be outside her window protesting." I didn't think so but I passed that question along to y'all for some more discussion.

I made that post in the middle of 4 client calls so the segues between topics clearly missing.

Two things - First, that was 17 years ago and people change
their outlooks as they get older. More life experience usually
(not always) means you are smarter and more understanding.

Mostly - look at what the family did. They didn't hook their
relative up to 'LIFE SUPPORT'. The man was terminally ill from
mortal injuries. Terri Schiavo wasn't terminally ill. Her body
was perfectly healthy and working just fine, except the brain
was injured ... and it wasn't the part of the brain that sustains
life. Food and water, legally and morally, are NOT artificial life support.

Two different types of body problems. Not even close to
being the same type of situation.

Just as a very sad side note, seen on CNN today that the protestors yesterday caused a women to miss the passing of her grandfather.
She was spending time at the Hospice and was notified that he was about to pass. She ran out in her pajamas and didn't have any ID when trying to get through the police blockade. She missed his passing by a couple of minutes. Very sad. The protestors should feel shame. Terri's parents asked everyon to stay home with their families, and the protestors didn't listen.

GULP.... as hard as it is for me to agree with anything which surrounds Tom Delay.......I must agree with Flyersfan on this one! However I still think politics and not morals are involved in the case of Delay's actions! But I disgress!
