'US faces war with N Korea this year'
By Toby Harnden
(Filed: 16/07/2003)

America is heading for war with North Korea as early as this year because of mismanagement by the Bush administration, according to a former US Defence Secretary.

William Perry, who was Pentagon chief under President Bill Clinton, said that the White House was "losing control" of events now that Pyongyang appeared to have begun reprocessing spent nuclear fuel rods.

Mr Perry said that North Korea would soon be testing nuclear warheads and that terrorists could buy the devices and use them against the US.

"I have thought for some months that if the North Koreans moved toward processing, then we are on a path toward war," he told the Washington Post.

"The nuclear programme under way in North Korea poses an imminent danger of nuclear weapons being detonated in American cities."

Mr Perry, who is widely respected in foreign policy circles, said he had reached his conclusions after speaking to White House officials, Roh Moo Hyun, the new president of South Korea, and senior Chinese officials.

His warning came as it emerged that North Korean officials told the Bush administration last week that they had enough plutonium for six nuclear weapons and would move swiftly forward with making them.

Scott McClellan, President George W Bush's press secretary, said: "North Korea has made a lot of claims in the past and it's not something at this time that we can confirm the accuracy of.

"We are continuing to seek a diplomatic solution."

Mr Perry has been closely involved in Korean policy debates since leaving the US government. Until recently, he had been publicly supportive of the Bush administration, arguing that the problem of North Korea's nuclear ambitions could be controlled.

"I held off public criticism because I had hoped that the administration was going to act on this problem," he said. He added that "time is running out and each month the problem gets more dangerous".

Proper talks with Pyongyang were very unlikely to happen. "My theory is the reason that we don't have a policy on this, and we aren't negotiating, is the president himself.

"I think he has come to the conclusion that Kim Jong Il [the North Korean leader] is evil and it is immoral to negotiate with him."

"Losing control" is an understatement when applied to the Bush administration. And not singulary in respect of relations with N.K.

Do you guys remember William Perry...he helped deconstruct our military as per BC's wishes. I suppose the only sentence of import is that which says he was DS under BC!!

Did Bush give NK the go ahed to process nuke fuel???

NO. BILL CLINTON AND HIS FAILED CAPITULATION STRATEGY DID!!

We are in this mess because of the Clinton administrations policy failure that is coming home to roost since 9/11

...also, since Bush is now responsible for the Black Plague, racism, hunger, and soon, natural disasters; I submit my surrender!!

If God doesn't come down and grab Bush and Kim by the heads and get them to 'realize' a few things......this situation can very well 'go over the edge.'

Personally, I think Kimmy is 'itching' for something. He is trying his damndest to 'push the right buttons'......he keeps pulling those 'levers' and he may well pull the right one, eh?!?

N. Korea don't mess with USA.
They get beaten down.
HUAAAH!!!

The truth is even though we'd nuke the hell out of them, we wouldn't be able to occupy N. Korea.

And if they somehow manged to pull off a land invasion on the Pacific Coast, they could take half of the USA. They'd make it to Chicago before we could stop them.
Of course I'd kick their @$$e$ out of Texas.

As long as they don't pull off a ground invasion we'll be alright.

Lock & Load brothers,

A ground invasion of the continental US... are you insane man?
Do you realise the logistical problems involved on a project as huge as that.

Even if by some grace of god they managed to pull the resources together we'd have sunk the entire fleet before it got halfway into the sea of japan.

China doesnt even have the seaborne resources to invade taiwan. So how could north korea invade the continental united states???

Madness i say!

I heard a very good interview with someone involved with this on the radio yesterday, here is the crux of it as I remember it.

America used to follow a law that they would only use nuc weapons against countries that also had nuc weapons, hint: if you don't get nuc weapons you are safe from ours.

They resinded that law and instead have loudly declared that they will use nuc weapons anywhere they felt like it.

Suddenly small countires have no safety if america doesn't like them.

IN Nth Korea, the leadership there is based on families, despite being officially communist, and the guys in charge are scared stiff of losing power as whole dynasties of people will be killed if they step down. There is no place for deposed leaders to run to in Nth Korea.

So... America declares open season with nuc weapons, Nth Korea leadership are scared for their personal lives if they lose power, how to resolve it? Build your own nuc weapons, in a futile threat in return to stop america from deposing them.

As the speaker said, there is no way even after making nuc weapons that they can actually deploy them, let alone hit america. Its a bluff, based on their fear.

So Bush in his warmongering bluster has created the situation we see ourselves in....

I don't know how'd they do it, but if they cloaked (hid) a fleet and it got here, there are barely any soldiers left.
The Nationl Gaurd sucks, I know, my cousin is in it.

If they got here, they could live off of the US.
Forage off of your enemy. We'd have to give gorund, they'd threaten to nuke our big cities.

Just a thought, I'm not saying it'll happen.
It's pretty much the most desperate thing they could do besides nuke us.

Thats not going to happen tassadar.

I'm sure all those bases in the USA arent exactly empty of troops.

And NC, i read the article about that a while ago, i believe it was in december, it is indeed a frightening concept.

the only people in a korean conflict that would use nukes is kimmy. the US's nuclear polocy is one of defence. and for that to be put in effect and used a nuclear attack would have to happen on american soil. ill say it again: BRING THOSE COMMIE SONS A BITCHES ON!

They're their own country, they can do what they want. You act as if what they are doing is wrong, take a look in the mirror, take a look at your own country and what weapons they possess.

GET REAL.

I hope every country gains nuclear capability. When that happens there won't be any wars, not unless everyone wants to die.

N Korean nukes could number 250 by 2010: think tank
A United States think tank predicts North Korea could produce 100 to 250 nuclear weapons by the end of the decade.

The estimates were released by the Non-Proliferation project of the Carnegie Endowment.

The high estimate for North Korean production is that by 2010 it could have 253 nuclear weapons.

The low-end figure is 112 nuclear weapons in the same period.

If this is true then there is no doubt we will be engaged in a war with N. K. sooner rather than later.
If I were a religious man I would be praying that these "talks" they just agreed to go well. Since I'm not, I'll be getting the provisions together .
