-Suspected Islamic rebels have ambushed a train in southern Thailand, injuring at least 19 people, police say.

The armored railway carriage was on a routine inspection of track in the province of Narathiwat when two bombs exploded, overturning the train. The police said the rebels then opened fire on the railway officials and their police escort.

It is the latest in a string of attacks which have killed as many as 600 people in southern Thailand in the past year.

The two blasts occurred at about 6:15 a.m. local time on Sunday (2315 GMT Saturday) near the station of Sungai Kolok, close to the Malaysian border. The explosive devices were reportedly detonated by a cell phone.

Thailand suffered large-scale property damage and loss of life when the Indian Ocean tsunami hit its western shores in December 2004. Though much of the area has now fully recovered, I think the terrorist saw that as an there chance to establish themselves.

BANGKOK, Thailand: Suspected Islamic rebels bombed and shot at civilians and police officers traveling in an armored train in Muslim-dominated southern Thailand early Sunday, injuring at least 19 people, police said.

The armored railway carriage was making a routine inspection of track near the Sungai Kolok district station in Narathiwat province when the bomb exploded, tearing the track apart and overturning the carriage, said police Lt. Nathiwat Deekaew.

The 10 kilogram (22 pound) device was triggered by a mobile phone at around 6.15 a.m. (2315 GMT), just minutes after the train departed from the station, he added.

BBC news
More than 80 people died after a protest turned violent, Seven were killed at the scene and 78 died in army custody from suffocation, after being loaded into army trucks.

In the same area and related to the same peoples, things like this may help explain why the area is in such chaos.
