KYRGYZSTAN's acting leader Kurmanbek Bakiyev said today he would stand as a candidate in the nation's new presidential election set for June.

Bakiyev, a 55-year-old engineer by training, was named acting president and prime minister by parliament after opposition protests ousted the veteran Soviet-era regime of Askar Akayev.
