Good question, the best I can come up with...here goes:
If the gov't lets us know, then obviously our enemies will know what
capabilities we (the US) possess. Some stuff may even be un thought of and therefore our enemies will not have a counter weapon (if that's a word).
Now if they go public then we no longer have the advantage of serecy and our enemies can come up with ways to stop whatever it is, counter weapons (I
hate thet word) and everything else. There's no need for bullet proof glass "without" the bullett.
Im sure there are many other reasons but thats the one that comes to my mind

Very well said...
They will disclose information when it's outdated IE the F-117 and B-2, at the time they unveiled such technology they were already hard at work on a
new generation of radar AND optical stealth.
I think disclosure about ET's will be when civil spacefaring will come about, when a civilian spots an alien ship and tapes it or if it discovers an
alien outpost on let's say the moon or mars, they will be little denying it I think...well who knows...

We all have good points. Whether or not the government ever tells us there are aliens, we know there are. BUT, if the government never tells us our
own technology, they gonna piss me off. BRING OUT THE M4's BOYS, WE ARE BUSTIN INTO A51. I wish i could do that.

it is a matter of national security. would you want the enemy to know what weapons you have in your arsenal? you always want one last trick up your
sleeve. i dont think our public would panic, unless it was like mind control or maybe biological weapons. you always want to keep your enemy guessing,
because when your enemy knows everything about you, you have just lost.

Ok, suppose you were thinking of coming into my house at night time with just a knife to kill me. Would you do it if you knew I was sitting in the
dark with an MP5 trained on the door watching you with IR goggles and waiting for you to come in? There are no windows for you to sneak through and
there is only one door. You have to use that door because there is no other way in.
Perhaps the big secret about Area 51 is that what is developed there might not be so cutting edge after all.

In the first Part of your message, you Gave the example of someone trying to kill you being kept away by a threat. That is the whole idea behind
deterrence, keeping peace by using the threat of force. That is the whole point to Nuclear weapons, someone would have to be insane to want to use
them!
Now for your question! Why the secret? It's called surprise. Let's go back to your senarieo: You're coming with that knife again. But this time all
you know is that I have a weapon of some kind (you have no clue what it is!). You also know that I'm watching your every move with IR Goggles.
Remember, one of us is going to die if you open the door! Do you want to open the door, knowing that you are most likly the one who will die?
Remember, I'm watching you, so I know what's in your hand, but you have no idea what I might have waiting for you on the other side of the door!
Surprise is the best weapon anyone has ever come up with.

if they have Aliens..why hide them...the media have gave them bad publicity as it is...if they hide them and then let the aliens out when they feel
its right who says its not gonna cause a world wide caos..then the aliens might think we are hostile then attack us..stupid goverment ¬_¬
