The weather has been nuts here and very frustrating.

We had a warm spell and there are more ticks than I have ever seen. We just got another cold snap, but don’t think its cold enough to get rid of them. Every year the ticks seem to be getting worse. I personally have never had one bite me. I eat a lot of garlic. I just worry about my dog.
She gets them even with the tick medicines/preventives. I even use a natural spray on her.
I’ve heard from friends and neighbors that the are seeing more than ever too.

Now to the good stuff, morels. They are just popping up, and so are the ramps. The ramps were very early this year for us.
With Covid everyone and their brother is out foraging. I’m thinking about getting some mushroom logs and looking into other mushrooms and just grow them myself. I love morels but I don’t think there will be many to find anytime soon.

I found a mushroom once, it was growing out of a cow patty.

If you have room, get some hens, or even better, guinea hens!

Ticks where I am are insane, but our chickens eat all the ones around the house.

The dogs still get a few, but only because they roam in the really long grass.

We have acres and acres of ramps out here. I’m thinking about trying to dehydrate some this year.
I really love them with beef!

Do you feel it’s worse this year?

Quick-pickle them.

I feel like it gets worse every year. It's just warming up here in Nova Scotia, but I'm sure it will be crazy because there's no real effort to eradicate them.

You can also look around your property to find the eggs and babies before they roam around, chop off the foliage they're on and burn them. The years we've been able to find a nest and destroy it we've seen far less on the dogs.

We do, I only have to go over to the nature reservation in town and pick my fill.

Everybody already listed a bunch of springtime goodies. Nettle's nice and soft this time of year. Fried up with some garlic and butter. Better than spinach I think personally and it's supposed to be full of vitamins and stuff.

When I was younger, I would trek through the woods all summer and rarely got ticks. Now, I can't walk into the yard, around the property, or into the woods for a short amount time without having a few on me. Found 3 yesterday just after a couple hours of normal yard stuffs.

Yes. The morel of that anecdote is wear bug spray.

Yes but we eat them differently, dried then in soups.

Interesting. Never heard of that, makes sense though.

We'll have to try that.

ETA: was a spontaneous question, I now see that another Canuck asked the same thing. Canada is the fiddlehead nation, literally and figuratively, too. lmao
