A watch means a tsunami may impact Hawaii, but the threat and potential affects are still being evaluated by the PTWC.

”Based on all available data a tsunami may have been generated by this earthquake that could be destructive on coastal areas even far from the epicenter,” the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said in a bulletin. “An investigation is underway to determine if there is a tsunami threat to Hawaii. If tsunami waves impact Hawaii the estimated earliest arrival of the first tsunami wave is 4:35 p.m.”

We see the warnings issued, then everyone holds their breath and crosses their fingers for the next few hours.

Are there sensors in the open oceans that can tell if a Tsunami wave is passing by?

Updated by the USGS as 8.1
earthquake.usgs.gov...

Tsunami forecasters were still gathering data to see if any dangerous waves were generated from the quake but computer simulations suggest if any waves were triggered, they would reach Hawaii around 4:35 p.m. Hawaii Standard Time (6:35 p.m. Pacific Time).

The U.S. Tsunami Warning Center in Palmer, Alaska has not issued any advisories or watches yet for the North American West Coast and are still reviewing data to determine if there is any threat.

They are claiming the earliest estimated time of arrival for first waves would be around 4:35pm HST (assuming thats Hawaiian standard time)... so im in Seattle, which i believe would make that 7:35pm my time tonight..

No or small tsunami as there are many islands and AU between NZ and Hawaii that would be hit and give warning to more distant islands

There's a DART early warning system placed in strategic locations on the ocean floor to sense when a Tsunami wave is passing.

Is the senor grid located in a region that will help alert Hawaii of this potential inbound Tsunami?

Apparently, Several buoys are already in "tsunami mode" (blinking) following the magnitude 8.1 earthquake northeast of New Zealand... "Tsunami Mode" means that the buoy detected a fluctuation in the water level that could indicate a tsunami. Buoys are all over the Pacific, so scientists can monitor tsunami waves as they travel across the basin

Lots of family back in NZ being evacuated to higher grounds

www.news.com.au...

Many North Island coastal residents in New Zealand have been told to move immediately to higher ground after a third massive earthquake off the nation’s coast.

The magnitude 8.1 earthquake struck off the Kermadec Islands, 1000km northeast of New Zealand, at 8.28am (NZT).

“People near coast from the Bay of Islands to Whangarei, from Matata to Tolaga Bay, and Great Barrier Island must move immediately to nearest high ground, out of all tsunami evacuation zones, or as far inland as possible,” the National Emergency Management Agency alerted at 8.45am (NZT).

The National Emergency Management Authority said residents must evacuate these areas even if they did not feel the earthquake. “DO NOT WAIT. A damaging tsunami is possible.”
