My Dark Soul

A sharp light pierces a wide open eye. The eye dark, scared and dilated stares at the light. The face owning the eye is just a dark pool to the side of the fearful eye. The eye calls wordlessly for mercy, yet shows no reason to expect any. The bruised mouth on a partially charred face contorts into a shrill scream.

The resounding scream and the light of morning through the crack in the curtains awaken Doc in his sweat drenched bed. "Who was that screaming?” he wonders to himself. The sound of that scream seems so familiar, yet so out of reach and the eye was his? Why? Sweating and shivering from the cold damp air of the otherwise darkly lit room. The air brushing against his hot and sweaty body as if cubes of ice.

Doc *looking about* tries to set up, peering into the darkness of the room looking for the source of the scream he thought he heard, and had awakened him. Doc *speaks* who is there? , as he slides his hand under his pillow in hopes of finding his side arm which awaits there for him faithful and true, ready to strike on command. Who is there, *rustle sounds in the distance* WHO IS THERE!? Doc repeats again.

No answer…… Doc *grabbing his blue steel Desert Eagle .50 semi auto hand gun w/ laser pointer and flash light attachments* I am only going to ask you one more time who is it , who is in this room? *rustle sounds* I have a gun and am willing to use it , now who ever you are you better be gone before I count to ……..*scurry, shuffle, thud*.

Doc *scanning comes briefly across a mirror not hitting it directly with the light of his weapon so as not to be blinded by the reflection of the light* Hello who are you , *scratching sound from behind the mirror* Hey you don’t want to tangle with me! Whoever you are you better leave! *Nothing* Doc looks at the mirror again, then begins to scan left of it when out of the side of his eye he sees a screaming face in the mirrors reflection. *responding with the quickness of battle conditions Doc swings the weapon back right and squeezes off a round before he even knew he had done it*

Doc *sitting in a pool of sweat in his bed relaxes* Not again, *Not Again Doc says, wiping sweat from his eyes* Get it together man! Turning to the night table he sees it a, tattered and torn picture of her the frame long ago destroyed and the picture removed.
If you don’t get it together you’re never going to get her back, she has left this world but I know she will be waiting for me on the other side unless I end up doing something stupid and end up in Hell. She is in heaven now I know she is, but I will never get to see her at this rate.

Page two

Doc sets on the bed in the pool of sweat. *day dream state wavy fade out*

The lovely women and Doc setting on the California coast, Doc knows her name, and how much she wants to share his life. Her name was Bunny, he always loved that name.
It dripped of innocents *thinking Doc wonders why she ever thought she wanted him*.

Bunny didn’t know what Doc was like behind the veil of privacy that kept his career separate from their love life. Doc wanted it that way, but he knew soon he would have to let her in. She was already pressuring him as it was, with little nudges in the ribs. She often asked how I know you are who you say you are, *Doc uneasy just chuckles the question away*. Doc replies to her, what do you mean we have no secrets……Right?

Bunny just frowns and looks away, *fighting her urge to get answers for fear of loosing Doc* No I guess we don’t have secrets do we? I just wanted to know that I wasn’t being left out of the areas you obviously don’t wish to discuss. Doc replies what areas are those? Bunny says you never talk about the important things, Why? Doc knowing this was a last ditch attempt by the suggestive nature of the statement like as if to indicate a frustration that was reaching a point of explosion the point Doc thought would end it all.

Doc says Bunny, what is it you think I’m keeping from you? Bunny replies * in a coy and whimpering some what powty tone* Why don’t you talk about your family Doc, or your job? Doc I know things are not easy for you sometimes, it is obvious in your face when I bring it up, just as your face looks now, I ……*Doc interrupts her* Bunny what do you want to know about my job? *Doc totally omitting the mention of family hoping she doesn’t catch the omission* *Bunny noticing the omission but just glad to get a bone thrown her way* Says well what type of work do you do for the Federal Police Forces, is it scary, interesting, fulfilling, what do you do and how does it make you feel at the end of the day..

Whew Doc *sighs out loud* thinking to himself maybe this will be easier to handle than I thought, Well Bun…… Bunny stops Doc wait before you start you aren’t doing this because you feel forced? Do you really want me to know? Doc replies well I don’t like bringing home work, I did that once when I was with my ex-lover and fellow officer and well it ruined our relationship and I don’t want us to end up that way. Bunny says Doc I love you and it is going to hurt me more to not know your inner most thoughts and fears, as well as the passions that seem to drive you. I knew you where and are living a very dangerous life…….and you know what, It doesn’t matter I just want to be included. I just want to be part of your life not an outside observer. Doc Says *hesitates shortly* Bunny
I do love, and I want to tell you, but I…………………….

Page 3

*CRACK, RUMBLE, ROAR, GRUMBLE* Doc is ripped from his waking dream just as he is about to tell Bunny what she wants to know. *Doc feeling a vibration deep inside him* *Flash of light, crack, rumble, roar, again,* Startled Doc swings his fire arm in the direction of the sound which is the window with only a sliver of visibility between the make shift curtains, *a severe thunderstorm* Doc relaxes and lowers his weapon.

That window, the window that started his own personal Hell and the war, the window that opened the story that would script Doc’s life for the next seven years. Doc rises from the bed still nude as no one is around to get dressed for the nearest in habitant left in the city is in a high rise hotel about 40 clicks east of Doc’s fortress. The fortress more a prison than a home only had a window no doors from here Doc ran his operations day to day. From here Doc watched California fall in ruin this window, this solitary window was the only thing keeping his pain in and the world, what world was left out?

Doc looks out the window onto a devastated city, no longer a city now, but an island since the big one seven years, three months, and 2 days. Yes Doc remembers the day because that is the day she died, she promised never to leave him. Doc knew that was a promise neither of them could make, but his heart was irrational and couldn’t let go of the promise she made. His heart that solitary sound thumping in his chest that for the greater part of his day and nights only reminded him that this was all real and happening to him.

The city was once called San Diego; he was stationed here before way before his life fell
apart and the world turned upside down. It seemed like he had been here at this Naval Port for a life time. The port another fine testament to days lost and the crumbling ruins of the Government that once was here to protect freedom, but now the Government has become the enemy of peace, a Police State, festering corrupted and a house of war mongers is what it had become.

Doc starts to look off into the distance and drifts off inside mind, his mind a tormented collection of neurons and chemicals racing back and forth, the only occupant memories that can still survive here. Memories of her memories of the way things all ended. Doc reached behind him self and snagged the arm of the tattered mangy chair he sat in all the time just to stare out the window and remember.

Doc sat down and like all the times before began reliving the vivid, horrific almost suffocating memories of things that had happened. He seemed almost transfixed one the window not seeing through it but actually at the glass it’s self, and it held horrific pictures. He couldn’t turn away though, he had to stay he had to relive it every time, because she was always there in the visions or waking dreams he saw in the window.

Page 4

The dreams or reflections of his soul he saw in the glass seemed to be becoming dimmer
less detailed. He didn’t want to miss a minute of it because as soon as it faded he would have lost her again and he couldn’t bear that. Doc begins to drift thru time, disoriented and incoherent mostly. The visions were not what they were before, and this dream this horrific vision was no different. Doc sets and concentrates on the coming dreams hoping today wasn’t the day she was lost to him, yearning for the softness of her voice the beauty of her spirit and the warmth of her touch.

Doc arrives at the first destination on what was to be a ride of living hell and agony of loss. He sees it, the place and time was about 4 months after the disaster and the loss of his love. The police state government still not in place and anarchy was in rule, men and women and children walking around every where, this was the spot, this is where the face and screams from his night mare lived

Bryan - the story is looking great. Got nice tension building and its a dark tale with no obvious conclusion. Watch for typos and spelling errors. Looking forward to reading the next section.

The police state government still not in place and anarchy was in rule, men and women and children walking around every where, this was the spot, this is where the face and screams from his night mare lived.

The ground once so solid now grumbles, like as if to point out man’s presence as one that was intolerable. Intolerable it seems because the ground seems to be doing what ever it could to cause horrific damage and deaths so destructive often either the body was not identifiable , or was buried, swallowed by the ground un able to be recovered from the grounds death grip.

The last 112 days it seems have not been without challenges from man’s darker side fighting and clawing to escape from the dark labyrinth in which it has been imprisoned
for what seems to be a dark eternity. The darker side, that primitive self survival instinct, kill or be killed, steal what you must, destroy in rage that which you despise. Things in the human soul that made the wars and terrorist attack around the world seem like a peace rally hippie gathering.

It started on about the third day with fights broke out grieve stricken people trying to get to the loved ones trapped in the large city buildings which most of which became ominous tombs during the big quake. Tombs of steel glass and block surrounded the cherished ones man, woman, father, mother, child, sisters and brothers. Each trapped in the hell of pain, darkness consuming their last moments on earth.

But, at least most died in horrid beginnings, that comforted some who where content to obey the quarantine zones around these large tombs. The zones a testament to the callus heart that which the government had beating in its chest. The government sworn to protect its people felt that there was no way that anyone could have survived, occasionally only proven wrong by the uncovering of people whom had been vigilant, and strong enough to survive despite all odds.

Page 5

Somewhere in one of those buildings being quarantined there in the center of the destruction was her. The women he loved and wished to marry the women he swore his life to, the women he was considering giving everything to, heart mind and soul. He wanted to go in and was denied the right to do so by the commanding officer, see Doc was stationed the next block over holding the line on a zone he looked upon the building with despair.

He wanted to go; looking at the building was tearing him apart piece by piece, the twisted metal of the buildings metal inner shell empty and dead its heart and skin now lying at the footings of the proud looking and ominous looking skeleton.

The skeleton seemed to wail now almost like the moaning man tortured a damned soul forced to walk the realms of the nether region of purgatory not alive but not dead either.
A soul suffering, cold and ripped from this world for reasons unknown to the man, ravished by the sorrow of the life he can see but cant be a part of.

Somewhere in Doc’s heart he thought maybe that she was not yet with the man yet though and that’s why he wanted to go. He wanted to know she was still here for him …alive and holding out those long, warm and pleasant arms that drew him into the safety of her bosoms the sanctuary of her grasp was the driving force of his change in life.

A calming comfort that the violence that which was his life had been forgiven by God, if this where not so then why send the angel he sent in form of the women of his dreams. She helped him despite the fact she didn’t make that effort. Doc thought to him self if she survived and if he could find his way back into her arms that he should let her know the miracles she had performed in his life.

Doc wouldn’t rest till she was back there with him. He asked the commanding officer for a pass to enter the zone where she was supposed to be. After every shift he explained to the commander he would like to enter and begin digging for her. The commander a normally unfeeling and cold hearted bastard, with a blood lust for battle unmatched by any man, an old fashioned Marine from days long gone, now the California Office of the
United States Federal Police Forces Office of Territorial Affairs was well known for his intolerance to violations of the rules.

This time however Doc saw a change in the commanders normally scowling face, aged and scared and weather beaten. Doc couldn’t believe his eyes a tear, yes one solitary tear which seemed to appeared as if an ocean of water in the scope of the desolate desert which it now found itself trickling across. Let me ask you something the commander in his scratchy and deep toned voice, sure sir what is it Doc replied. Who is this woman to you? Is she your true love, Doc replied yes she is the essence of my life sir.

Page 6

The commander turned away from Doc. Then raised a soiled and tattered kerchief to his face to escape the humiliation of the solitary tear by wiping away its existence. Doc the commander said did you know I lost my wife in Los Angeles? Doc answered no sir I didn’t, I’m sorry for your loss sir I remember your wife from the Thanksgiving dinner a couple of years back she was a lovely women, intelligent and beautiful, and her cooking sir was the best I had ever tasted.

The commander, with a slight chuckle look son you don’t have to blow smoke up my butt. You know as well as I do that women couldn’t cook to save her life….but that was one of the things about her I miss most now. Doc you have your pass, and you also have 1 weeks leave to get as much done as you can. It will take you to long working at night for a few hours by yourself. Doc understand this, you will bring your young lady home.

If you don’t then you shall never be any good to me in this mission. You will find her, you will bring her home and you will make your peace with the situation. My wife died alone Doc, don’t let your loved one die that way promise me you will find her Doc.
Don’t fail me soldier. Doc replied I can’t fail sir, I have to know. Good Doc because if you don’t complete this mission I will personally put a boot in your butt, do you understand son, Doc replied yes sir….and sir thank you.

Page 6 Continued

Speak nothing off it…the solitude of the dream and the room is suddenly broken, that hideous sound that sound that turns Doc stomach menacing and filled with dark deliverances of future events. The sounds crackle, squelch, static broken gabled and stress a voice emanates from the broken and taped barely functional box, the box a forty year old piece of junk radio long ago in need of replacing. Its replacement refused, Doc didn’t want to let go of that old Tm-170 Radio. He loved that radio, is sounded strange to everyone, but that didn’t matter it was his bought for him by her as a gift.

Kind of funny she would buy it now that Doc thinks of it. Maybe it was fait or intuition she knew this radio would help him somehow. Now it brings any news from the zones, more importantly to him is the zone in which dead or alive she was imprisoned. She must have known somehow that something was destined to happen and this radio could lead him to her.

Doc scrambles to the radio bashing his shin into that ratted old chair that minutes ago brought him the past in which she so softly dwelled fading ever more into an abyss of lost thoughts. Crackle, and static and the broken voice, Doc picks up the radio and presses it to his ear. Del** 1***** to bas*, Delta ****** *o base…..Base Come In! I repeat Delta 1 Niner to Base Come In Damn it! Base! Do you copy, Delta 1…………….Doc breaks in
Delta 1 to Delta 1Niner, come in…. over.

Page 7

Delta 1***** to D**** *ne, Have you heard from base over? Delta 1 to 1 Niner negative.
Base is off the air due to after shock damage…..over. Delta 1 Niner to Delta 1 a*e *ou the du** officer? Delta 1 to Delta 1 Niner affirmative I am the zone officer..over. Delta 1 to Delta 1 Niner, state you situation…Over. Delta 1 ***** **s a si*****on Zeb** do you copy over? Delta 1 to Delta 1 Niner, confirm did you say you have a situation Zebra, over? Delta ****** con*****, I have a situ*** Z**ra, repeat confirmned Zebra.

This is 1 Niner confirmed co** Ze*** at Zone 117 Novem**, Over! Delta 1 to 1 Niner hold your perimeter and I will arrive your location in 7 minutes, you copy? Delta 1 Niner copi**, **er and out.

Location 117 November, Doc says to himself in utter awe and shock someone found alive at her building, it can’t be it’s impossible, no one has been found alive there in 2 weeks. The last person was half dead; no way could someone have survived, no damn way at all.

Doc rushes getting his tattered gear on and nearly killing himself in the process tripping and stumbling around the messy room. IT CAN’T BE ….thud the faithful chair is knocked aside, releasing its imprisoned dust collection into the already dank and dusty air. Doc knocking it aside to gain access to the window that only exit from the fortress of solitude, Damn I gotta get a door Doc exclaims as he fights with the old rotten and distorted wooden sash. Finally dislodging it from its dew laden sill dripping water from its torn and tattered lower parts onto Doc’s face.

Doc finally falling onto the rusted and squeaking fire escape outside, hitting his head on the railing, ouch I really must get a door. Doc rises wipes the water from his face and moves to close the window. Damn close you stupid…..forget it #! The window had refused to close as it had become catty cornered in the frame and jammed in place. I don’t have time for this, Doc hits the window frame and it dislodges and slams shut cracking the window glass in the process.

Screw it …. Doc tears down the shacking and groaning ladder to the ground nearly falling from the dew in the rungs. I have to move out of this rat hole soon before it kills me, wouldn’t that just be an ironic end me dying trying to get out of this pit and her being found alive. That would be the ultimate turn to a soldiers life dying on the way to the woman he loves, what an epitaph that would be for my head stone.

It didn’t even cross Doc’s mind what time of day it was. This was the worst time to travel, evening time and during a storm an electrical, but it didn’t matter she was waiting.
It didn’t matter that there where scavengers out at this time and in this weather all of them would be out. The stupid radios didn’t work in this crappy weather. He should have not even gotten the message that he just got from Delta 1 Niner.

Then it starts the first drops of rain cold and unforgiving undeterred by the weather guard in his uniform, seeping in past it in minutes finding every tiny break in the uniform it could almost like as if a dark and sinister thought process was at play. Time was not on Doc’s side now. With the rain comes scavengers, scrounging for rats and insects flushed from their hiding spots by flooding.

Scavengers didn’t always hunt the animals and insects still managing to dwell here. Soon Doc will be noticed and become the next course on the dinner plate. That is of course after they eat all his stores which consisted of very little in the first place, just one container of water, and two or three emergency rations is all that would keep them from putting him on the dinner menu, that was fine with Doc that is if he only ran into a few what he couldn’t shoot he could give the food and water to.

Thump, clank, crash …. Damn Doc says. Scavengers, where though Doc readies his side arm saving his long arm ammo which due to weight and size was less. Doc disables the flashlight and laser pointer on the .50 Desert Eagle and crouches to avoid casting a point of reference and giving his position away.

Whoosh something flies by Docs position and hits a rat just about 20 feet to Doc’s left. Doc stops and scans the area …. Damn they are out already? Doc sights in on a woman scavenger and three boys mostly preteen, the four of them where still as dangerous as ten grown men and twice as desperate. The boys seemed to be following the woman, who was despite her tattered clothing made of an old mans coat and a skirt with long john underwear under it and old potato bags tied around some old dress slippers for shoes.

The woman, or should he say girl about 90 lbs soaking wet seemed to be in charge despite the youngest boy being buffed and obviously more dangerous than she, where these vagabonds following her, brothers or some orphan that clung to her early on in life looking for a motherly hand to care for them.

Something that happened a lot, right after the city fell many children cowered together in holes to escape the adults who preyed upon them as easy targets for robbery, rape, or God forbid food or slave labor. A flash of light revealed from the static discharge of the storm revealed a face and Doc was amazed she looked familiar. Was this girl from the base, a child of one of the fellow military personnel that shared the posting with him?

Page 9

No wait, he knew the kids well as they always hung around after school for tutoring help from Bunny. This girl was familiar but was not one of the kids he knew…another flash and a loud grumble comes from the sky the storm getting worse, but Doc was lost in the face of this child. Doc’s eyes opened wider and he began to speak Bu…. Thud then blackness Doc had been hit in the head with something. Doc fell to the ground and tried to clear his vision as he lay holding his head now bleeding. Another girl younger yet dressed much like the first girl. Who, Who are you? Doc spoke out. The girl looking at Doc a big pipe at the ready, about strike Doc again. Stop! Stop! Comes from the distance.

It was the first girl she had stopped the attacker from striking. What are you doing, Haylie? It’s a Federal, a stinking Federal exclaimed Dawn. Haylie runs to the location Doc drifting in and out manages to see through the foggy vision and pain. That face again the one he thought he recognized, it couldn’t be Doc stuttering said B, B, Bunny then Haylie jumps down off the pile of debris she was standing on with the three boys landing straddled over Doc. Bunny, Haylie exclaimed how do you know that name? who are you, how do you know that name? Doc blacks out.

Dawn says as he blacks out he is a Federal we should kill him, Haylie says no we must take him home, Jim can you Mike and Jake carry him, Jim says I don’t think we should. Haylie says again can you do it or not? Jim says reluctantly, yes we can. Haylie says good grab him let’s go before more fed’dies show up. Jim and the other two boys jump down and place a bag over Doc’s head as his eyes close and he falls asleep.

well since noone has chosen to jump in and add their two cents I have chosen to continue on by myself, the next post shall enclose the first chapter in full as edited for final write , I hope everyone likes it if not I tried.

I still want more people to join in put your own parts in here at any time I want this to be collabrative , you know like the forum suggests, if I wasnt willing to permit others to bring ideas why else would I be here.....

for the matter of ease I will also do so by posting one page at a time not multiple pages at a time this will allow for a break point to add pages more easily as they will be seperated so if you come up with a way to add a page and keep the flow going in what has already been written then it can be done with minimal effort by moving an existing page up down or even out of the rotation.

*CRACK, RUMBLE, ROAR, GRUMBLE* Doc is ripped from his waking dream just as he is about to tell Bunny what she wanted to know and that he finally wanted her to hear. *Doc feeling a vibration deep inside him* *Flash of light, crack, rumble, roar, again,* Startled Doc swings his fire arm in the direction of the sound which is the window with only a sliver of visibility between the make shift curtains, *a thunderstorm* Doc relaxes and lowers his weapon.

That window, the window that started his own personal Hell and the war, the window that opened the story that would script Doc’s life for the next seven years. Doc rises from the bed still nude as no one is around to get dressed for the nearest inhabitant left in the city is in a high rise hotel about 40 clicks east of Doc’s fortress. The fortress more a prison than a home only had a window no doors; from here Doc ran his operations day to day. From here Doc watched California fall in ruin, this window, and this solitary window was the only thing keeping his pain in and the world, what world was left out?

Doc looked out of the window onto a devastated city, no longer a city however, but an island since the big one seven years, three months, and 2 days. Yes Doc remembers the devastating moment because that is the day she died or at least she must have, she had always promised never to leave him. However, Doc knew that was a promise neither of them could make, or keep his heart was irrational however and couldn’t let go of the promise she made. His heart that solitary sound which had been the only sound, was thumping away in his chest and for the greater part of his days and nights only served to remind him that this existence was all too real and in fact was happening to him.

The city was once called San Diego; where he had been stationed way before his life fell
apart and his world had horridly been turned upside down. It seemed like he had been here at this Naval Port for a life time. The port itself representing a final testament to days lost and the crumbling ruins spoke eerily and spitefully of the Government that was once here to protect freedom, but now that had become the Government who slipped comfortably almost willingly into the role of the enemy of peace. The Police State, now festering corrupted and a house of war mongers was what it had become.

Doc starts to look off into the distance and drifts deeply inside his mind, his mind a tormented collection of neurons and chemicals racing back and forth without purpose. The only other occupant the stray memories that still survive here. Memories of her and of the way things had tragically ended. Doc reached behind him self and snagged the arm of the tattered mangy chair he had been setting in what seemed to be all the time now just to stare out the dirty glass of the tattered wood framed window and remember.

Doc sat down and like he had many times before slowly started reliving the vivid, horrific almost suffocating memories of things that had happened. That most assuredly was the reason that he seemed yet again to be almost fixed on the window not seeing through it but actually at the glass it’s self, and it held horrific, realistic reflections. However he couldn’t turn away, he had to stay he had to relive it every time, because she was always there in the visions or waking dreams among the pain and sorrow he saw in the windows murky reflections.

The dreams or reflections were those of his soul he was to repeatedly suffer. In the glass however the scenes seemed to be becoming less detailed. He didn’t want to miss a minute of it because as soon as it faded knew that he will have lost her again, this was something he couldn’t bear to go through again. Anxiously Doc begins to drift thru time reviewing the images which had become more disoriented and incoherent for the most part. The visions were not what they were before, and this dream this horrific vision was no different.

Doc settles his mind and concentrates to focus solely on the coming dreams hoping today wasn’t the day she had certainly been lost to him. He yearned ever more for that soft voice, the beauty of her spirit and the warmth of her touch. Finally he arrives at the first destination on what was to be a ride of living hell and agony of loss. He sees it, the place and time was about 4 months after the disaster and the loss of his love. The police state government still not in place and anarchy was in rule, men and women and children walking around every where, this was the spot, this is where the face and screams from his night mare lived.

The ground once so solid now grumbles in what only could be as if to point out man’s presence was one that was intolerable. Intolerable it seems because the ground seemed to be doing what ever it could to cause horrific damage and deaths, so destructive often that either the body was not identifiable, or was buried, swallowed by the ground unable to be recovered from the coldness of the grounds death grip.

The last 112 days it seemed to have not been without its challenges as well. Man’s darker side began to surface fighting and clawing to escape from the dark labyrinth in which it had been imprisoned for what seems to be a dark eternity. The darker side, was that of primitive survival instinct, kill or be killed, steal what you must, destroy in rage that which you despise or don’t understand. Things in the human soul that made the wars and terrorist attacks of the past from around the world seem like a peace rally, filled with marijuana smoking hippies gathering screaming peace and love.

It started on about the third day with fights which often broke out because of grief stricken masses who where trying to get to the loved ones trapped in the large city buildings which destine to become ominous tombs in the days after the big quake. Tombs of steel glass and block which once stood so proudly and now surrounded the cherished ones father, mother, sisters and brothers. Each trapped in the hell of pain, darkness consuming their last moments on earth.

Thankfully had mercifully most died an been spared the horrid beginnings escaping the slow death of which man nor animal should ever endure that comforted some who where content to obey the quarantine zones around these large and unstable tombs. The zones a testament to the callus heart that which the government had beating in its chest. The government who had sworn to protect its people felt that there was no way that anyone could have survived, yet repeatedly they were proven wrong with the sporadic uncovering of people whom had remained vigilant, and strong enough to survive despite all odds.

The skeleton seemed to wail now almost like the moaning man tortured a damned soul forced to walk the realms of the nether region called only purgatory not alive but not dead either.

The commander a normally unfeeling and cold hearted bastard, with a blood lust for battle unmatched by any man, an old fashioned Marine from days long gone, now the California Office of the United States Federal Police Forces Office of Territorial Affairs was well known for his intolerance to violations of the rules.

The commander turned away from Doc. Raising a soiled and tattered kerchief to his face to escape the humiliation of the solitary tear shamefully occupying the desolation that was his face, by wiping away its existence. Doc the commander said did you know I lost my wife in Los Angeles? Doc answered no sir I didn’t, I’m sorry for your loss sir I remember your wife from the Thanksgiving dinner a couple of years back she was a lovely women, intelligent and beautiful, filled with a zest for life and grabbing hold with both hands and her cooking sir was the best I had ever tasted he states with as straight a face as he could possibly muster.

The commander, with a slight chuckle lifts a ham sandwich with only one bite missing look son you don’t have to blow smoke up my butt. You know as well as I do that women couldn’t cook to save her life...but that was one of the things about her I miss most because now cookies food doesn’t seem bearable where does he get this stuff he calls food anyway? Doc you have your pass, and you also have 1 week leave to get as much done as you can.

Don’t fail me soldier and most important don’t fail her. Doc replied I can’t fail sir, I have to know for better or worse I owe her and myself that. Good Doc because if you don’t complete this mission I will personally put a boot in your butt, do you understand son, Doc replied yes sir….and sir thank you I just wish I could be going out and finding both of our loved ones not just my lost love.

Speak nothing off it the commander begins to reply when the solitude of the dream and the room was suddenly broken, that hideous sound that sound that turns Doc stomach, menacing and filled with dark deliverances of future events and pass sorrows discovered. The sounds crackle, squelch, static broken garbled and with unusually high levels of stress a voice emanates from the broken and taped barely functional box, the box a forty year old piece of junk radio long ago in need of replacing. Its replacement refused, Doc didn’t want to let go of that old Tm-170 Radio. He loved that radio, is sounded strange to everyone, but that didn’t matter it was his bought for him by her as a gift.

Kind of funny she would buy it now that Doc thinks of it in the scope of current events. Maybe it was fait or intuition or maybe something as simple as love drove her to buy this radio which would help him somehow. Now he just hopes it brings good news from the zones, more importantly to him is the zone in which dead or alive she was imprisoned. She must have known somehow that something was destined to happen and this radio could lead him to her when it did.

Doc scrambles to the radio bashing his shin into that ratted old chair that minutes ago brought him the past in which she so softly dwelled fading ever more into an abyss of lost emotions and thoughts. Quickly fading was the past only to be replaced by new emotions and realities, horrid, dark and of things that have and continue to transpire. Crackle, and static and the broken voice, Doc picks up the radio and presses it to his ear. Del** 1***** to bas*, Delta ****** *o base…..Base Come In! I repeat Delta 1 Niner to Base Come In Damn it! Base! Do you copy, Delta 1…………….Doc breaks in Delta 1 to Delta 1Niner, come in…. over.

Delta 1 to 1 Niner hold your perimeter and I will arrive your location in 7 minutes, you copy? Delta 1 Niner copi**, **er and out. Location 117 November, that old branch of some obscure government facility, now only a number on a map eerily as much of a disaster as the locations it now marks. Doc says to himself in utter awe and shock someone found alive at her building, it can’t be its impossible, and no one has been found alive there in 2 weeks.

That would be the ultimate turn to a soldiers life dying on the way to the woman he loves who was thought by all to be dead, what an epitaph that would be for my head stone. It didn’t even cross Doc’s mind what time of day it was as his feet hit the ground, him having just let go of the ladder to speed the decent. This was the worst time to travel, evening time and during a storm, but it didn’t matter she was waiting. It didn’t matter that there where scavengers out at this time, and in this weather all of them would be out. The stupid radios didn’t work in this crappy weather either. Help would be unreachable he shouldn’t have even received a message; let as lone the one that he just received from Delta 1 Niner.

He would rather die from illness caused by the debris dust or pneumonia caused by the storm than to die as an unfortunate and unwilling guest to some blood letting which could only end in him becoming that nights main course.

The boys seemed to be following the woman, who was despite her tattered clothing made of an old mans coat and a skirt with long john underwear under it and old potato bags tied around some old dress slippers for shoes commanded respect as he could obviously distinguish. The woman, or should he say girl about 90 lbs soaking wet seemed to be in charge despite the youngest boy being buffed and obviously more dangerous than she. Why where these vagabonds following her? Where they brothers or some orphans that had clung to her early on in life looking for a motherly hand to care for them. Maybe she was some kind of matriarch so vicious size didn’t matter.

This seem to be something that happened a lot, right after the city fell, was that many children cowered together in holes to escape the adults who preyed upon them as easy targets for robbery, rape, or God forbid food or slave labor. A flash of light revealed from the static discharge of the storm revealed a face and Doc was amazed she looked familiar. Was this girl from the base, a child of one of the fellow military personnel that shared the posting with him?

Doc begins to blacks out.

Jim and the other two boys jumped
down and place a bag over Doc’s head as his eyes close and he falls asleep. In what seems to be another dream; his weary eye partially open, his vision still foggy from the blow received earlier from where he still didn’t quite understand.

A figure hazy somewhat shaped in the form of a man but still unidentifiable was all he could make out. Doc begins to try to speak his lips parched and sticking together for lack of moisture. B…B… Bunny is that you his mind still somewhat delirious from what must be a concussion. His speech slurred making it difficult to hear. The figure shouts, Hey Dawn hurry get Hailey! The feds awake hurry go get Hailey, a female voice answers from the distance Okay. Doc tries to speak again Bunny no don’t leave I’m here come back.

Rattle, scuffle, creak then clank the sound of the girl in her haste could be heard as she went out the door…Bun…ny wait I’m here come…..Doc starts to feel sleep falling in upon him again.

After a few moments he hears the sounds again the door was opening and this time two female voices could be made out among the sounds of scurrying feet. He couldn’t make out what they where saying, barely conscious as it was, he tries to open his eyes and look around for the source of the sounds only to find a distortion in the light patterns as the two new figures entered the room. He tries again Bunny is that you? A female shush you guys, what did you say? Bunny, Bunny can’t see you are you ok? The female speaking in a firmer tone now, obviously disturbed by what he was saying, Bunny, how do you know that name? Who are you Federal? Answer me who are you and how do you know that name.

The female turns to one of the other figures. What did he talk about before I got here Jake? Did he say who he was and how he knows that name? Jake replies no Hailey he just keeps babbling on the only thing that could be made out was Bunny, who is Bunny?
Hailie says shush and turns to the female figure that had entered the room with her, Dawn leave us please, Jake you and Dawn wait outside the door for a minute please.
Sure Jake replied without question; however Dawn replied wait who is this Bunny person and why can’t we stay? Just please go outside Dawn it’s not for you to concern yourself. Jake please take Dawn and go now…. and Jake stay close to the door okay, in case I need you.

Jake shuffling Dawn out the door while Dawn exclaims don’t Push Me, replies sure Hailie no problem. The remaining figure obvious to Doc now was Hailie from what he had heard. Hailie he said where, how? Hailie speaks up, yes my name is Hailie and as for how you got here you where hurt by Dawn on accident while we where hunting, don’t worry I know your worried about being dinner, I mean people eat anything these days.
Now as to where you are in our home it to is of no worry to you. We are up in a higher part of the city. We can see everything coming from a couple of blocks away. Now back to my questions, how do you know the name Bunny, and who are you? Doc could only think to respond by rank and last name as he had been trained to do so, I am Captain Krutaski, and he then falls back into his sleep only uttering incoherent words after that.

Hailie pulls the covers back up over Doc pats him on the chest and says it’s going to be a cold one tonight, we will talk later get some rest now your safe don’t worry. She then walks out of the door and pulls the make shift door to, made from an old blanket the dust shakes loose as she does. Jake, Hailie says, what did he say before I got here? Nothing but the name Bunny Jake replies, why? I need to know did Captain Krutaski say anything about being part of a patrol, or why he was out there, and did he say anything else about the name Bunny? No he didn’t Jake replied. Okay Jake here is what I need you to do. Keep everyone out of this room and keep it closed, no one and I mean no one but you and I are to enter this room do you understand. Jake replied with an obviously questioning tone sure. Promise me you will do this Jake its real important promise me, Jake replies I promise.

Hailie continues to say; one more thing Jake I taking Jim with me to do a shallow patrol, I want to make sure that the Captain didn’t have a group with him and that possible rescue parties may be in the area and centering in on our position. I need you to keep Dawn here.
She must not leave; you know how she is and will only get hurt or hurt others. I want her kept occupied and out of the Captain’s room as well, can you do that? Sure Hailie I will get her to clean and start cooking the rats we caught, she has some new stew idea she wants to try anyway.

That is excellent, Hailie replied, now as for you Jake and Mike. I would appreciate it if you stayed close to the Captain and tend to his needs while watching out for Dawn. See if you can get some food and water into him ok. Sure Hailey and what of Mike? I need Mike to do close perimeter surveillance in case we don’t see something coming and they get past us. Make sure Mike follows my rules though if he spots something he is to fall back inside if he can with out giving away our position; otherwise he is to move off away from the building to our other meeting place down the street. What ever you do make sure Mike doesn’t try to fight anyone tell him to stay out of sight.

Sure Jake replies do you want the Captain to get up if possible? Yes but he is only to have access to his room and the dining area, I don’t want him stumbling across his gear or running into Mike or Dawn. Sure thing Hailie, Jake replies. Hailie turns slightly in the direction of a small burrow which used to be a hall but now is only a rat hole in the middle of a pile of rubble, this is where the sleeping quarters where more defensible do to the narrow entry it was safer to sleep there than in any other rooms in the building.

Jake asked Hailie as she paused in her calling of Jim, Hailie when should you be back?
In about one hour Jake just long enough to make sure we are not in danger. Save us a plate we will be back before the food is cold, Hailie says hold on a second Jake, she walks closer to the hole and yells into it Jimmy can you here me, come on let’s go. The muffled voice from inside responds just a minute Hailie I’m on the way, hurry Hailie replied. Sorry Jake, hey don’t worry we will be back and we’ll keep our eyes open, Ok.

Jimmy hurry up, we need to get out there now before someone wanders up on us. Just as she finishes Hailie gets bumped in the nose by an emerging head coming out of the darkness quickly, Mike and Hailie both simultaneously yell out ouch. Hailie feeling her nose start to bleed turns to the near by box top table fashioned out of a couple of old foot locker lids and grabs a towel to place over her nose. I think you busted my nose Hailie begins to say as she turns back towards the hole where Mike stood outside of in the open.

Hailie stops mid statement to exclaim to Mike what is that? Mike coy just replies what are you talking about looking around his body purposely avoiding acknowledgement of the .50 Desert Eagle tucked in his belt. I don’t see anything. Hailie already in pain becomes furious not only are you clumsy but stupid as well, that…. She reaches into Mike waste ban and pulls the gun out.

Page 12

Now do you know what I am talking about, Hailie drops the cloth and she pulls the clip out of the gun and discharges the round remaining in the firing chamber, as the blood begins trickling from her nose again? Jimmy you know I don’t want you guys using guns, the only thing they are good for is killing people, that is why we hunt with rocks and spears and I don’t let guns in this house. Jim responds and just what do you think Imp bringing it for, we have a fed here and we are about to go out to make sure his buddies are not coming for him. No we don’t go out there to kill, we have never gone out there for that that is what separates us from the monsters who kill children to eat and the feds who kill to enforce some stupid curfew and us the ones just trying to survive this # hole. Hailie slams the gun down on the rickety table and stoops to get the towel the blood running out of her nose going down her face and neck.

She shakes the dust out filling the air with a thick cloud of particles some from the rag some from off the table. Jimmy I want you to take this gun and ammo and put it back where I had it now and don’t forget the bullet on the floor. If you or anyone touches the Captains stuff again they will have me to answer to do you guys understand. Answers come from all around the room each person in different locations. Good now move it Jimmy we are running behind and I don’t have to waste on your dilly dallying go now move. Jim not saying a word goes to the table gets the gun and clip and stoops to get the round on the ground not raising up but just sliding into the hole leading to the rooms beyond to return the gun to its previous location in Hailie's bunk.

As Jim disappears down the hole and out of ear shot, Hailie turns to Jake and says see what I was trying to tell you now Jake. Jake chuckles and with a smirk on his face says yes Hailie, but you know he is just trying to be a big man and protect us from the Federals. I know Jake but all he is going to succeed in doing is getting him and us killed one of these days. Just a moment after she finished Jim emerged from the whole, he had heard the part about him getting himself and the others killed, I’m sorry Hailie I just wanted to help. I know Jimmy Hailie replied, but you have to understand that is the wrong way to go about it. Now forget it okay, I’m sorry for yelling at you really. Now are you ready, if so we better hurry the Federals won’t be far off and we need to make sure they don’t find this place. Sure thing Hailie, I’m ready let’s go. Hailie turns to Dawn who was closes to the door at the time. I need you to lock this door when we leave and make sure no one opens it except for us and Jake is the only one to open the door when that time comes.

Dawn knowing Hailie was already in bad humor didn’t want to make things worse by arguing and simply responded yes Hailie. Jimmy you go first Hailie said and she followed him out of the door stopping to help close it from the outside. Creaking the door slowly pulls to the closed position and she hears the bolt drop into the locking position as Dawn locks the door from inside. Hailie says Jimmy you know I always hated that sound it reminds me of the movie where the door of hell opens and demons come out. Jim just smirks come on Hailie that isn’t going to happen besides what demon would want to live in this crap hole anyway. Hailie simply says yea I guess your right, let’s go.
