But WHY?

Why are there so many attention whores?

I think the reason is simple. It's because of technology.

Technology and remote work and government assistance and basically the easy lifestyle we have today affords people more time to sit and think. Idle hands.

It's only going to get worse as modern technology evolves and provides even more idle time.

What the hell are we gonna do when we have robot slaves?
