The news that Chicago is the most corrupt city in America probably should not surprise anybody. The University of Illinois at Chicago released a report on February 22, 2021.

The report covers the years of 1976 to 2019.

The statistics do not completely reflect it, but 2019 was a highly explosive year, during which some of the most important political corruption in the history of Chicago and Illinois was exposed. Bombshell corruption news reports that year dethroned the city's most powerful alderman, upset Chicago's mayoral election campaign, torpedoed the most powerful and well-known candidate, and threatened the political existence of Speaker of the Illinois House of Representatives and Chairman of the State Democratic Party, Michael Madigan.

The DOJ public corruption conviction statistics for 2019 do not come close to capturing the significance of that year’s corruption events. They miss both the large number and the importance of the public officials caught up in the year’s political scandals.

I get the feeling that there is so much more corruption that doesn't get caught. And the screaming and hollering of (false) allegations against others is just an attempt to keep the spotlight off of themselves.

Corruption is rampant everywhere now. They don't even try to hide it. Recent TV shows glorify the corruption as though it is not only normal but a game to win.

Did it go from 99.9% to 100%?

Sadly, Illinois has been losing 70 residents a day, for the past 10 years.

Corruption causes taxes and crime to increase, which in turns drives more people out, which in turn generates higher taxes and crime. It's a death spiral.

Gasoline skyrocketed here (Chicago suburbs) from $1.69 @ gallon on Christmas to $3.09 presently. But that might be more attributable to our new President.

Maybe that's why I like older police shows, like NYPD SVU, where they arrest corrupt judges, council members, priests, etc..

And with the eruption of the Uni-Party, its only going to get worse. Interesting opportunity though, for those young enough and clever enough to play the "game".

Did you actually read the report?

The paper does not make the case that Chicago is the most corrupt city in America. According to the figures presented, for the last decade Chicago has been in sixth place. Richmond, VA, Baltimore, Los Angeles, Newark, and Austin all had more corruption cases.

Yes. Did you?

Nonetheless, the DOJ statistics show that since the department began collecting the data in 1976, Chicago is the most corrupt federal judicial district in the nation,..

Cases is just the corruption that has been prosecuted or charged... not how much corruption is actually going on.

Chicago is corrupt. It is part of the political DNA. Graft, nepotism, and quid pro quo are all culturally acceptable in Chicago politics.

To be fair, most big cities are corrupt though.

Most politicians are politicians because they can't do anything else productive and are grifters seeking to enrich themselves so they are easily influenced.

Most people who would make good leaders and have decent moral compasses and ethics are not going to run for office. They are usually way too successful in the private sector and typically do not want to expose their families to the swamp known as state and local politics.

Apparently you, or at the very least, whomever wrote that paper, have never lived here in Illinois. But, I'll forgive you for not knowing. A good book to read about Illinois corruption is "Up Against Daley," written by Joe Mathewson and published in 1974. It goes back to the beginnings of the start of the Democrat-led and controlled corruption in Chicago that began in 1915, and hasn't ended since.

Operation Greylord

That sounds like another good book. There's a reason why so many governors of Illinois end up in prison.

Operation Greylord

Yeah people in Chicago know about Operation Greylord but what most people don't know is only a few actually went to jail. Most lawyers just received a slap on the wrists and continued to practice. No jail time, no pulled license, just a class in ethics.

While people think Greylord taught Chicago lawyers a lesson, they don't realize the lesson was you can get away with it.
So while the Court room ledgers listing cash bribes are gone, the currency is now is trading jobs and contracts.

Someone high up in the Federal Government, brushed the whole thing under the rug. Something fishy happened. I happened to know one of the judges involved - really unethical and corrupt. He wasn't prosecuted and then went on to handle what was called "complex" litigation involving State and Federal Government.
