Wouldn't there be a simple solution as to simply when you get something new you have to donate something old.

Not a solution. The article, and proposed legislation, says most donated items end up being burned. They demand laws that make it impossible for the average person to purchase more than a few items a year.
i don't believe that either about most clothes being burnt.
Since the Poles came here they have opened businesses called things like 'Cash For Clothes'.
They basically pay about a £ a kilo for old unwanted clothes. My sister had a clear out of a couple of years of her daughters clothes when they were kids so growing fast. She had about five black waste bags full. They just weigh the bags and pay you.
She got around £70 for things she would have binned and the shops are common in our city so it was only five minutes from her house.
I presume the clothes get cleaned and sold in Eastern Europe or the third world with the ones that can't be used again turned into rags, bagged and sold.

I'm just quoting the article:
www.euractiv.com...

Alongside this, recycling for these textiles is very poor. 87% is burnt or sent to landfill – roughly one garbage truck of clothes is landfilled every second across the world. Around 3% of clothes from brands like Nike, H&M and Louis Vuitton are never sold and go straight to landfill or incineration. The latter produces heavy metals, acid gases, particulates and dioxins, which can be harmful to human health. Even those textiles that are recycled are often downcycled into rags and insulation, ultimately ending up in waste streams. Only 0.1-1% is recycled fibre to fibre.

This is not an EU proposal. This is a pressure group suggesting that it ought to be an EU proposal. (ATS members have a track record for reporting pressure group arguments as government intentions)

It would be a political minefield, because it runs counter to the fact that economic "growth" is heavily dependant on over-consumption. The car industry has been living off it for decades. The last thing anybody will want in a slowly developing economic crisis will be a law which prevents people from buying things.

its why this big push against oil makes me laugh, the amount of ignorant people that are unaware of how many things oil goes into making is enormous.

Should we find a replacement sure, but till then we are stuck with it or a lot of things we take for granted go bye bye.

Not that I applaud the EU demanding, yet again, that we modify our behaviour through law.

But they do have a point about the toxic nature of man made fibres such as polyester.

The problem is,the same people who are now saying this is awful for the environment are the same people who have forced us into globalisation, the engine of which is the exploitation of workers in poorer countries who work in slave like conditions to provide the "developed" world with cheap, trashy, badly made junk clothing(and other products) so that our economies continue to grow.

Morally, the EU or any government don't have an arguement here-They forced us into this BS,even as most of us KNEW it was a scam from the start.

No. Not many in the US wonder at all.

Is that why the new US Admin is living off a steady diet of EOs that are killing jobs? That's a recipe for preventing people from buying things if nothing else is.

Could you point to where in the article they say that?

Thanks in advance.
