earthquake off coast of southern Japan, tsunami warning issued

TOKYO (AP) - A powerful earthquake rattled southern Japanese on Sunday, swaying buildings and prompting warnings of tsunami.

There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.

The magnitude 7 quake, which hit off the coast of Kyushu Island at 10:53 a.m. local time, was centred at an "extremely shallow" depth below the ocean floor, the Japanese Meteorological Agency said.

The agency cautioned residents near the water to flee to higher ground

My understanding of what I read was that Japan uses a slightly different scale than most. Richter may have had it at 7.0 and the Japanese scale at a low 6.

My info is based off of what I read in the reiters story.

And they say "off coast" and "shallow"...
My sources both said in the middle of the island and deep (33 km)
