US scientists have made an announcement that an experiment involving smashing Gold atoms together at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider in New York may have created, in the resulting micro-fireball, something that has the characteristics of a black hole.

A fireball created in a US particle accelerator has the characteristics of a black hole, a physicist has said.

It was generated at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) in New York, US, which smashes beams of gold nuclei together at near light speeds. Horatiu Nastase says his calculations show that the core of the fireball has a striking similarity to a black hole.

His work has been published on the pre-print website arxiv.org and is reported in New Scientist magazine.

I find it amazing that this has been achieved, especially following the announcement last week that CERN's latest experiment in Geneva may result in micro-singularities.

Although it isn't confirmed yet, I can only imagine the possible uses this could have in years to come.

Perhaps, if they could be generated easier and contained, the micro-singularities could be used for space exploration in some way.
