Britain faces EU-wide travel ban to curb spread of Covid mutation

Britain was hit with a travel ban on Sunday night by a host of EU countries to halt the spread of the new, more infectious coronavirus strain....

www.telegraph.co.uk...

So, a couple of notable items.

Purportedly, this is being done by the EU in response to the new COVID strain detected in SE England. However --

1. Unlike the restrictions on travel earlier this year -- which primarily affected people -- France has also blocked the movement of freight between the UK and the continent for at least 48 hours. As the trade talks between the UK and the EU have ground to a halt, the timing of this decision is at the least interesting. Per the Telegraph, something like 10,000 trucks / lorries usually move between the UK and the EU, daily.

2. All because of this new virus strain? But -- the new virus strain has already been detected in Italy and is likely elsewhere on the continent as well. The far shore has already been reached and breached.

The French government move re: freight feels like a pressure play to get the UK to cave in regarding the trade talks ("look what will happen if you don't do what we want!"); the timing is just too convenient.

Sounds like a huge mess for the already bleeding travel industry -- could affect something like a quarter-million travelers.

Cheers

It was in the papers this morning that Macron wants a no deal at all costs and the freight is just part of his plan to strangle Britain to death

Your probably spot on there. At the same time the EU have dealt with us very badly during negotitaions and many in Britain are seeing through this now.

I voted to remain in the EU as the benefits to me at least outweigh the negatives. Economicilly the free trade / single market, no hassles trading is amazing and we are totally integrated into the European economy. Plus travel all over the EU and live where one wants to is an amazing prospect even though we have been swamped by rooks of eastern Europeans who may have working hard b8ut bring bad traits with them like racists from Poland and thieving gippos from Romanai and elsewhere. But one lawys had the prospect of living and working anywhere in the EU hassles free and that was also a wonderful idea that harked back to the freedoms and barrierless landscape of pre WW1 Europe

But after the way the beurocrts if Brussels have dealt with our people wgen all we wanted was free trade and very limited legislation from the continent, the way the Brussels negotiatiors have dealt with us then being totally honest and realistic about it it's good we are leaving

So if The UK made a " democratic " decision to leave The EU, they have to be punished for it ?

Democracy is then a word The EU does not understand. And they wonder why we decided to leave.

Thank you for clarifying what we in The UK also thought was true.

Imminent problem is a basic employee/contractual one. The truck drivers who are stuck at ports, whether they be British or European, are still all officially working right now and earning their ££/€€. Even though they’re going nowhere.

They’ll have had their rest for driving purposes so that’s not a problem.

The problem is that many will be reluctant to do “another run” before Christmas in case they get stuck away from their families at holiday time. They’ve already earned their dosh for this week cos they’re stuck at the ports. And many don’t have to take new shifts if there’s a prospect they’ll be stuck away from home because of the holidays due to contractual T&C’s etc.

Trucks have already been stalled at the ports for 2 days. The French 48 ban takes that to four days. And with the holidays coming that’ll get worse.

We’re getting perilously close to the 7 days worth of food & household stocks held by U.K. distribution centres. And the U.K. Government might well lose the public on this one, as they did in March, once shortages in the shops become apparent. And that’s coming, folks, it’s unavoidable.

Well The Vice President Of The EU thinks The UK is being pathetic in wanting it's sovereignty restored.

"I find it totally pathetic to continue to speak about sovereignty in the modern world... You have to pool your sovereignty in the modern world."

www.theneweuropean.co.uk...

And there you have The EU's real aims. Straight from the horses mouth.

Brexit was always going to be a double-edged sword. We didn't stop to think about that when we stuck two fingers up at the EU four years ago, of course. It was high-fives all round because Brexit meant the UK could re-assert its own sovereignty. The latest manoeuvres are simply the EU asserting its own sovereignty, which they have every right to do.

France has broken the terms of " The Witdrawal Agreement " which is still in force untill December 31st 2020.

The Withdrawal Agreement provides that goods lawfully placed on the market in the EU or the United Kingdom before the end of the transition period may continue to freely circulate in and between these two markets, until they reach their end-users, without any need for product modifications or re-labelling.

ec.europa.eu...

Any fool can see what kind of game The French are playing.

Sure, please quote me whenever you talk in the UK. My word is at least as important like Macrons or Merkels.

Another point: Do you really think that ANYONE is thinking about Brexit as a democratic process? Is that air we are breathing?

It is all about money. Both sides are looking out only for the money, not for the people. That's it. Nothing else.
Anything about "the will of the people" is completely worthless and thrown out of the window the moment it goes against the $$$money$$$!

You have just clarified exactly why The UK decided to dump The EU " Ponzi Scheme ".

Thank you for that.

Multiple sources are now stating that France are in the process of re-opening the border over the coming hours. Sky News for example are saying something along the lines that it is to establish a "solid health protocol" but at the same time EU countries are also reporting cases of the new strain.

I don't like quoting the Daily Mail - hell, I don't read the DM for any more than the bizarre comments from it's readers - but here is the Daily Mail Report.

Do you think that BoJo is making all that fuss about "the will of the people"?
He and his cronies are ready to sell your kidneys (metaphorically spoken) to anyone who buys, as long as they get the bigger slice of the money.

Do you think that BoJo is the better person in this pandemonium? I really do not think that.

Nothing at all to do with the new strain. It is an illegal embargo because of Brexit.

If it is because of the Communist Contagion, why not do the same thing with China 11 months ago?

Good Post!

Yes its all about Brexit.
they said they would let UK keep 12% of its one Fish!
and give us 6million for the 89% that would cost 600 million.

the ENGLISH Seas are Over fish't by them!
they are parasites.
we will now have a chance to let the seas recover.

but the English Navy Will have to Fight to keep them out.
UK fishing boats have been Attack't in the past!
they should have Guns on the boats.

otheres have ask't if they can fish and pay well.
one said it would help and send cost gaurd ships to fight off EU fishing boats!!!
