In The popular "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" by the brilliant Douglas Adams the answer is 42.
A little cheat, for understanding our place in reality, a "hint" from me to you:
What's the question?
About life, the universe and everything?
What is our #ing problem?
What is the one thing we need to answer so everything will get better?

Imagine you get the one time opportunity to ask "The Artist Formerly Known As God" one question.
We're making a call with a magical phone and it's experimental and unstable so you never know if it will work a second time. It rings. A voice that is all of life in all times answers "Yes? This is Elohim?" The connection wimpers and almost breaks up.
What is your question?

You actually asked it yourself in the original post:

What is the one thing we need to answer so everything will get better?

How do I help make it better?

Yes. That's important self realisation and such.
But it isn't enough, you'd have to ask ... in relation to all that is?

I can concur to "something is misleading us".
But to say it's all his fault might set the wrong mood if you talk to someone who can wipe out all we know exists on a whim.

That's the same like asking about life, the universe and everything.

I kind of went overboard on one of Muzzleflash's thread in researching the 42 thing...

The great pyramid has a 42 degree slope, the angle between the eye and a raindrop when seeing a rainbow is 42 degrees (which got me to read the Newton's Optica in full and kind of injured my brains on that one)...

Still no wiser but if God was on the phone and I could ask him one question, I'd ask him how he was doing.

Peace

I love Asimov.
But it's no answer and no question. It's fiction. It makes you think.
But I don't know what you mean with it?

"Do you exist?"

and with the answer whispered, we all fade into a distant shadow, echoing cries of despair, and fade into nothingness..

Some things are best not asked of god. belief, is all there is to keep the mantle steady.
