They never said anything even close to that.


Well, they did say (this is just according to their website) that, "For 6% of the deaths, COVID-19 was the only cause mentioned."

That would imply that of the 236,232 deaths, only about 14,000 would be directly from covid.

Seems sort of close.

Comorbidities


It would be more accurate to say "solely from COVID, with absolutely no comorbidities."

Its not often anyone dies without comorbidities. For example, someone who dies of a massive heart attack might have had high cholesterol, diabetes and be overweight. Someone who dies of a stroke might have also had an active influenza infection. Someone who dies of COVID might have also had epilepsy.

The presence of comorbidities doesn't mean the apparent "cause of death" wasn't far and away the actual cause of death.
