As for the Big Elephant in the room......... The border wall.
Well I was never for it. I think there are numerous ways people come into the US, like airplane etc.
A border wall has always seemed like a waste of money to me.

Where the walls are the border police say they have less of their own men die and there are less drugs traveling and human trafficking's, they should know. They have been asking for a wall for ages.

Have you seen what Biden says he is going to do?

ETA - Oh, and otherwise, just leave the immigration process alone. People can still apply for citizenship, just like they always have been able to. No changes there. In the meantime though, they WILL obey the visa laws until they get there.

The system is broken, it shouldn't take a decades or tens of thousands.

It doesn't take "decades", and the only reason it takes 'tens of thousands' is because of political corruption...the very same thing we are trying to stop every day!

How do I know this? I am currently in the process of getting a foreign national on the path to citizenship here in the USA. We've already gotten him through the H1B Visa process and he's been green-lighted. Even under Trump's recent crackdowns! He's made it through the 'lottery' (which is very merit based). He's all set to get his appointment with the US Consulate, and is scheduled (really a formality). From there, provided he obeys his Visa requirements, he will be allowed to apply for a "Resident Alien" card (essentially a Green Card) which allows him an unlimited stay in the US, as he works on his Citizenship paperwork and tests. The process takes 4 years, not decades, and this will be the 2nd person I've helped through the process.

Here's the big difference; the people who take "decades" and require "tens of thousands" of dollars don't have a justifiable need to enter the country other than they want to be here over the country they currently reside in (Well hey, I want to live in Switzerland too, but go try that sometime!). That open door policy worked 'okay' 200 years ago, but it doesn't anymore. You can thank the liberals giving everything away for that!

And let's be honest about it (call it selfish/nationalistic if you will); one of the reasons for those open door policies 150 years ago was because we, the USA, needed "bodies" to fight wars to defend the nation. Right or wrong, we don't need those bodies now. I know it's a harsh and brutal reality, but it's true.

As it stands now, the US is "full". At 320m people, we've got way more than enough "bodies". Sadly, few of those will fight to defend this nation, so why add more? So, maybe one solution might be to have a box to check, or maybe a requirement, that if you don't have merit, then you have to sign up with the military to create that merit.

Times today, like it or not, are different now than they were 150-200 years ago. There's just a LOT more people.

Just stating the facts.

We should open the borders up. I truly believe those south of the border will work harder, better and for less in tens of millions of jobs in America. I would much rather have my coffee created by someone who remembers my name, is super polite and gets my order perfect with that little tree in the center than some 20 something with an attitude that after 2 years still can't get my order right.

A streamlining of the application process and waiting time to enable anyone who isn't a criminal to come here. Immigration is good for the United States.

I have a sister in-law that was approved and paid for around 2003, she is still waiting...lol We still do take in 2 millions or so a year I think...EU has showed us what happens if you do too much in a short period of time, so there must be a happy middle.

They'll work harder for only so long, just like everyone else. Once you start offering them $15/hour for doing clerking at McDoofus's, and offering them 5 years of unemployment, and paying them welfare $$$ for popping out more kids...they'll sit back on their ass like so many others and do nothing!

ETA - That's not a slight on immigrants; it's a slight on the whole concept of free wages and free stuff!

Well it wasn't a issue until the Left made it an issue since it was one of Trump's campaign promises. 25 billion seems like such a small amount now as the left wants 30 to 90 trillion...lol

The wall is actually great. I'm in the drone business and what the wall does is force people to funnel to a point to cross compared to randomly walking across a 1000 different points. It also slows things down even if they build something to help them over or try to dig under. There isn't 1000s of planes to use or 1000s of contraptions to use to get over, so what happens is 100s will funnel to maybe one point where something is setup to cross. This is very easy by drone to monitor and for the border patrol to catch people once they are crossed.

The wall is just one tool of many, but it is a very good usable tool.

I think you are correct but more like 2 generations not just 5 years. People who are hard workers don't just stop, but a few generations will corrupt the future offspring to be just like the rest of us...

BTW I read a article that 15 bucks an hour will lead to under the table lower wages as in Businesses will not hire at 15 and many people still need a job, so they say they will work for 10 per hour under the table, and they get the job.

Perhaps we should allow enough immigrant workers in to at least harvest the crops so they don't rot in the field. Americans refuse to work in the fields as stoop labor. At my farm in Texas we have machines to harvest the cotton but the onions just get plowed under for lack of immigrant workers.

The way to do this is this. Institute a work program. you work for 4 years and in those 4 years take citizenship classes. You have to get a job and keep it. pay your taxes, and do not get in trouble with the law. After that you can go to your local Immigration office, show your record, get your test if you need it ,then walk out a brand new citizen.

I have been saying we need a robust work visa program to use seasonal workers. They come in and then they leave.

Gee...that actually is the law! Except there's no long time limit like 4 years. That's about the time it takes, but there's no pre-determined time line.

We used to have one that worked very well....

My Grandfather always used the Bracero Program for seasonal workers during the harvest. That's gone, now its more popular to hate the Mexicans. You pay for that hate at the grocery store!

Visa programs are stopped for Mexican workers....

Every situation is different, and just because you know people doesn't mean it doesn't take a very long time for legitimate people....

www.cato.org...

time spent waiting to apply for a green card (i.e., legal permanent residence) has doubled for applicants immigrating through the family‐sponsored and employment‐based quota categories — from an average of 2 years and 10 months to 5 years and 8 months.

More than 100,000 legal immigrants — 28 percent of the family‐sponsored and employment‐based lines with quotas — waited a decade or more to apply for a green card in 2018, up from 3 percent in 1991. By contrast, 31 percent had no wait at all from the quotas in 1991, while just 2 percent had no wait in 2018. The quota system also imposes limits on the number of green cards for individual nationalities, causing longer waits from countries with the highest demand. Indians averaged the longest wait because of quotas — over 8 years and 6 months.
Behind those immigrants who applied for green cards in 2018 stand nearly five million people waiting in the applicant backlog

See that up there, the average for a person that is family sponsored or employed is still almost 6 years!

I've got that now too. Not all American workers are lazy, and not all immigrants are hard working.

Like someone else said, there is a middle ground.

We need immigration to continue the pyramid scheme of Social Security. Americans are having less children and we are living longer and that doesn't work to keep Social Security going. Those old folks who started taking it at 65 years old living into their 90s are throwing a wrench into the system. Who knows maybe CoVid will level the playing field as it seems to be harder on them.
I'm kinda thinking I like the idea of a trade process for immigration. We'll take 5 of your hard working, educated, Socialist system hating, strong family, America loving folks in trade for a couple homeless drug addicts, or welfare mama's.
