To all that helped me on this thread....

"need help with a lost drive. Win 7"
www.abovetopsecret.com...

.... I can't thank you enough.
Btw the disk IO errors were the USB hubs - all drives and the external were OK

Managed to get most of my Data back. Bought a new Ryzen 3 3100 3.6Ghz 4 Core 8 Thread, 32G DDR6 ram. Super fast and with 3 extra 2 Tb drives shouldn't have any issues for a while.
My eldest son showed me how to set up a network share between the 2 and my youngest helped me get rid of useless Win 10 apps and features.

Next step after a long rest is set up a dual boot into Zorin

Welcome to the club.
I hope you have at least the Nvidia 2000 series or better yet , the Nvidia 3000 series to drive the video.
Lose the mechanical drives and go all m.2
2 x 2TB NVME M.2 PCIe 3 x 4.0 does the trick.

"Gigabyte GeForce GTX1650 OC 4GB GDDR6"

EVGA 2060 KO Ultra 6gb
As good as the 2070 (at least) and has the 2080 chipset.
Comes in at about $300
About 10x the performance of the 1600 series.

?
Gigabyte GeForce vs nvidia google

NVIDIA doesn't usually sell graphics cards directly to end users. So in theory, they could be quite different in quality. ... NVIDIA partners/customers (EVGA, Asus, Gigabyte, etc) buy these chips, design all the support circuitry for them (adding memory, power regulation, interfaces, etc), and sell the actual cards

Ah yes - my son told me he had one of these now - after I configured the Build. They' were probably trying help me keeping costs down

Wait , Gigabyte does produce Nvidia cards.
Nvidia DOES sell their own cards . FE (Founder's Editions also called Reference)
The reason I mention the EVGA 2060 KO Ultra , it is nearly as good as cards costing 3x as much .

Take 2 m.2s and run em in a RAID 0 and you have speed to loan out....
Except , back them up regularly .
The warranty on em goes out in 3 years , but most are rated for 1,500 TBW (Terabyte Writes) on the average now . About 8 years of very heavy usage,

Maybe in a years time. Adequate storage for now. I deleted over 2TB of movies but kept a list of them so I don't download them again

That's the beauty of building you own PCs
You don't have to buy everything at once.

You have a great start , that AMD 3100 will be good for a while to come.
The memory is outstanding .
Don't forget to set the XMP profile in the UEFI (the only way to get the most bang for your buck from memory)

You have done a bit of future-proofing.
