Good evening ATS.

I'm looking for recommendations on audio books.
I have a subscription to Audible.
For the first time in almost a year, I decided to log in to my profile last night.
To my surprise I have 10 credits to spend on audio books.
Seems as though you get a free book for every month your subscribed.

I think I pay around $10 a month for the membership.
They give you a credit for a free audiobook every month.
Any book they have on the site, you can use your credit to buy it.

So when you figure it out, the books on the site cost between $15-$30.
If you only use your monthly credit to buy the book you want, your actually getting a really good deal.

So anyways, I have a stack of credits and I'm looking for recommendations.

I have a wide variety of interests:
Non-fiction (mainly military)

Sci-fi (currently listening to "Aliens: River of pain". It's a companion audio book for the movie Aliens.
Awesome sound effects, excellent voice actors. The woman sounds identical to Ripley.)

Physics and Astrophysics

And Mathematics.

Those are just my go to's.
So any recommendation is appreciated.

In the non-fiction military category I'd go for Neptune's Inferno, covers the Guadalcanal campaign and the true turning point of the Pacific War.

World war z unabridged version!
Lots of famous people do the character voices, and its a cracking zombie apocalypse story but told through notes, audio diaries, and interviews with survivors after the event.

If you like that kind of thing its well worth checking out-some bits are crazy and stick in your mind, its visceral.

Got it,
Thanks!

You've probably read some of these
But recommendations for you:

"Outlaw platoon".
It follows the experiences of a platoon in Middle east war.

Into the fire.
Dakota Meyer And Bing West.
Absolutely incredible account of The battle of Ganjgal.
Dakota won the medal of Honor for his acts on the battlefield that day.

The Outpost - Jake Tapper.

I read the Original book, but that was years back.
It sounds like it old be a fun listen!

There's also an Alien Isolation unabridged audiobook.
Sound effects, excellent voice acting.
It's a great listen but Amanda Ripley's tantrum style flashbacks in key moments, sort of kill the immersion.
But if your cool with that, I recommend it.

I am partial to a Discworld audio book to help with my escapism. Terry Pratchett's character and descriptive writing is perfectly brought to life by either Nigel Planer or Stephen Briggs, depending when you enter Discworld.
My personal favourites are The Witches Series (Equal Rites, Carpe Jugulem, Masquerade etc.) and the Tiffany Aching series, mainly because of the Nac Mac Feegle who do seem to live their very best life... or death.

I can offer a link to a great resource for audiobooks to stream.

I love the Pendergast series by Lee Child and Douglas Preston.

Because I was burnt out with all the negativity that was going on, I chose to enter the world of audio books. At one point I was getting an audio book a day from the Cloud Library.

I have Audible also. I have had it for years, so my library is pretty large. I have found audio books to be a wonderful way to relax, learn, and be entertained.

I have so many favorites, but I like the Lee Child books.

YouTube....

Last I got on audiobook was Stephen Kings Dr. Sleep (before the movie)

On YouTube I’ve been listening to a ton of HP Lovecraft and Arthur C Clark. A bunch of quality free stuff on YouTube. And the Creepypasta stuff for driving to work. Look up Dark Somnium account for quick free stories. The 5th Trumpet is my favorite.

Just thought of two that will stick with you a while after reading.

The Sparrow by Mary Doria Russell and Room by Emma Donoghue.

You may not think they are masterpieces but you will definately be left with a lot to think about.

P.S.

Your local library probably is associated with Cloud Library, where you get free library e-books and library audio books after you register.

All free, but Audible has some books that Cloud Library does not have, so I use the both.

I enjoy listening to podcast on my drive home. The thing is, I work 2 hours into the remote Canadian wilderness lol.
There's no net, let alone cell coverage where I am for almost that entire 2 hour drive.
So I always download everything before the drive.
I've honestly never heard any Lovecraff before.
For sure will check it out though.
Thanks!

Hey Thanks,I had not heard of that one-I love the whole Alien universe,I'm going get that story today.

Have you read "Aztec" by Gary Jennings?

That is an absolute barn stormer of a story about the life of an aztec guy growing up before and during the arrival of Cortez and his conquistadors.
The author spent a decade in mexico, researching the book.
I cant reccomend it enough, but be warned It had some weird side effects on me including lucid dreams where I actually went to Tenochitlan at the height of the Aztec civilisation.Every night. For weeks..Im not joking.I have friends there. They trained me make and use a macuahuitl sword.I still remember it as a real memory,so strange.
Never had dreams like it,and not 100% sure they were actually dreams.

I also got PTSD from certain aspects of the story-all the symptoms anyway

That makes it sound bad,but its the best story I have ever read.
Give it a shot if you are brave and manage to find a copy-not sure if his books have been turned into audiobooks yet,but they really should be IMO.

Thanks for the recommendation!

I know exactly what you mean about not knowing for sure if something was just a dream or not.

Every single night for almost 3 months, I did the best I could to sleep my life away.
I was taking Champix for quitting smoking.
One of the side efffects, the only side effect I had actually, was intense Lucid dreams.
I was able to control them, I could go anywhere I wanted, most extraordinary - I had conscious conversation with the inhabitants of my dreams.
It felt like I discovered an entire new world.
I would wake up in the morning disappointed that i had to get up.
All I wanted to do was be in my dreams.
It sounds insane as I type this looking back at it, but those experiences felt just as real as me sitting here.
So yeah, I know exactly what you mean!

I was only able to find Aztec Autumn, the sequel to Aztec in audio format, that was in Audible.

I could not find it in Cloud Library.

Back when I was working 7 days a week, 16 plus hours a day, to provide for my Mother, two nieces, and a nephew, my only affordable relaxation was books.

I was a ferious reader and could become completely immersed in a book. So immersed that I could see, smell, and taste what was happening in the book. I could get so immersed that I could actually walk the landscape in the book.

So I understand.
