Fairplay i suppose, then again it may be kind of hard to tamper with what looks like industrial, or railway electrical boxes, when we are all dubbed up in our gaffs.

That's a point. I read it as a pound sign, originally (force of habit). Now I'm left wondering which continental country is posting warning notices in English.
