Do you do updates when they come out, or choose the day you want to install?

We had issues with hours and hours and hours of install activity.
This month we picked the day and it went much smoother and much faster.
Of course, that is only one month...and we'll see how it goes in the future.

Also, how old is your laptop?
And it is a regular hard drive or SSD?

Open a command prompt
copy the below line in and press enter
sfc /scannow
DO NOT interrupt it .
then restart

open a command prompt
copy the below line in and press enter
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
DO NOT interrupt it .

restart

What does the second DISM thing do?
Is it for any and all cleanup issues????

DISM (at least with those arguments) goes out and verifies the Windows installation integrity vs. Microsoft's deployment servers.
Good thing to remember.
And...remember my Windows Repair All in One.
That is my secret when things get truly desperate....
