Border Force has intercepted 409 people, including young children, on board 27 boats, with several further vessels still being dealt with.
Some of the migrants were carrying children too young to walk.
Prime Minister Boris Johnson earlier on Wednesday said the UK had become "a target and a magnet for those who would exploit vulnerable people in this way".
Some 145 people had crossed the Channel in 18 small boats on Tuesday.

This isn't about asylem it's about mass migration, time the Tories got tough on this invasion instead of just spewing forth pretty words and doing sod all.
This Tory government is starting to look as incompetent as the last Tory government.

Why do we 'intercept' them at all?
Quite reasonably if you're no sailor getting half way and being 'intercepted' is much better odds than having to cross all the way and make landfall.
The asylum seekers could be better intercepted on shore.
