KNOW YOUR RIGHTS

There's a bit more than three words to that song, try explaining the rest.

''You gotta be able to go out there and do it for yourself.

No one's gonna give it to you.''

Joe

No one's gonna give it to you......interesting quote...

''There's nothing but bad news in the newspapers to make us live in a constant state of paranoia. That's what they want because it keeps people in fear.''

Hmmm
Joe was ahead of the fake news curve eh?

FFS, I've told you which songs to listen to, which books to read.

I've even explained to you what the song you repeatedly mention - but are completely unable to offer any explanation of the actual lyrics - was written about.

I'll make it easy for you, here are the lyrics - AM gave you some snippets earlier and you were again unable to offer any explanation for your interpretation of Joe's lyrics.

This is a public service announcement
With guitar
Know your rights
All three of them

Number one
You have the right not to be killed
Murder is a crime
Unless it was done
By a policeman
Or an aristocrat
Oh, know your rights

And number two
You have the right to food money
Providing of course
You don't mind a little
Investigation, humiliation
And if you cross your fingers
Rehabilitation

Know your rights
These are your rights
Hey, say, Wang

Oh, know these rights

Number three
You have the right to free speech
As long as
You're not dumb enough to actually try it

Know your rights
These are your rights
Oh, know your rights
These are your rights
All three of 'em
Ha!
It has been suggested in some quarters
That this is not enough
Well

Get off the streets
Run
Get off the streets

Please enlighten us all - including Joe if he were still here - how those lyrics are about The Second Amendment in the US and not the class system in the UK?

You could then take the time to listen to the songs I pointed you towards and the two AM so kindly mentioned.

There's plenty more if you're still confused.

Sometimes, when you're in a hole you should just stop digging.

Here is a quote, it's from wiki but I guess you can do some leg work and find out if it is legit:

Strummer described himself as a socialist and explained, "I believe in socialism because it seems more humanitarian, rather than every man for himself and 'I'm alright Jack' and all those arsehole businessmen with all the loot. I made up my mind from viewing society from that angle. That's where I'm from and there's where I've made my decisions from. That's why I believe in socialism."

Also from this article

Strummer blamed many of the bands of the time for allowing punk rock to degenerate into a “shameful product hawked by the record companies” and “used to promote right wing ideals.” In no way did he want to be part of the creative and social diluting of the punk rock philosophy. The Clash’s eponymous first studio album clearly marked where they stood on things.

“Two devastating things happened at this time,” Strummer recalls. “Margaret Thatcher became Prime Minister of England and Ronald Reagan became President of the U.S….it was hard to tell who would be worse but we knew that a tremendous struggle was ahead…their tendencies leaned to the far-right if not fascism.”

Not much of a fan but from that little bit of digging it seems Joe was anti-right.

You really can't look past the words he wrote and sang and recorded for all to listen to.

They really are unequivocal and self-evident.

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS!

Wtf is he meant to be quoting? Several people have replied to you explaining the song and the band.

The rights in the song are all universal rights, probably a song about the inability for the average Joe to have fair protection of rights... I'm a 90's kid and haven't gotten round to clash yet... Things are a bit different in the UK too. The song though? Has # all to do with the US or it's Constitution.

It's ok that he sort of mis-understood the lyrical content of the song, people do that.
We all take from music what we see in it.

He tried to imply that Joe Strummer was supportive of The Second Amendment and the militia's etc.

Now I've been a BIG fan of The Clash and Joe Strummer since I first heard The Clash album back in '77.
It's not often that I categorically state that I know something.....but I KNOW Joe Strummer would have been passionately opposed to those militia types and that Know Your Rights was written essentially about the inequalities of the class system in the UK.

This has been pointed out to him on quite a few occsssions....but the guy assumes that he knows far more than the rest of us.
He is incapable of giving any sort of explanation for the songs meaning other than repeatedly quoting the song title.
He has been advised to listen to the whole Clash/Strummer musical catalogue - something I would highly recommend any music fan to do - and reading material recalling Joe's life and the history of The Clash etc.

But he knows better.

He keeps asking for quotes; I think lyrics he wrote and sang qualify as quotes.....maybe I'm wrong there....but I really didn't want to make things TOO easy for him and was sort of hoping he'd go and discover the delights of Strummer and The Clash for himself.

I will take any opportunity to discuss The Clash and Joe Strummer and was also hoping to an open and civilised conversation/debate but this member seems incapable of such behaviour as his arrogant and locked in mindset prevents him from considering alternative viewpoints to his pre-conceived ideas despite the mountain of evidence provided.

Now I like taking the piss, something which is obviously a two way process.
But this pastime seems beyond him as well.

I'm not sure if his obstinance lies in his personal dislike of me or his inability to enter any sort of reasoned discourse due to lack of intelligence, lack of critical thinking skills, simple ignorance and arrogance and the insular attitude that many Americans have in thinking everything is about them and their issues......or as I suspect a mixture of all of those things.
